Residence

When does the school year end? I'm looking at new rez and it's from august 22-april 30. does that mean school's over by april 30??? cause that's just freaking awesome! also, if i were to reply after april 1, what are the chances of me getting new rez?

Here's the deal with residences:

Exam period goes from mid april till april 29th. The 29th is the last day of exams, though many people finish earlier (if it wasn't for my stupid management elective, I'd be done April 20th!). You must move out of rez by noon on the 30th. Yes, it is pretty freaking awesome, except for the fact that my Calculus final is in less than a month. That is more freaky than freaking awesome.

When you apply for residences has absolutely no bearing on your place in line. The way the residence system works is this: The deadline to apply for res is sometime early june. After that, all the names of hte applicants are entered into a sort of lottery system. The order in which applications are reviewed is completely random. So if you're high on the list, your chances of getting into your first choice are good. If you're midway on the list, and they evaluate your form only to see that all the spots in your 1st choice rez are taken, then they move down to your second choice, etc, until they come to a residence that isn't full.

So no one can evaluate your chances of getting into New Rez. It's completely random.

Oh yes, on top of that, I don't think that there really is a "bad" residence at Mcgill....they all have plusses and minuses. I will say I'm in RVC, a last choice for many girls, but I have met very very few people who haven't loved it. Even those who put it dead last now say that they are really glad they got placed here.

thanx for the reply. omg u've become like the mcgill guru. when i posted my questions, i knew that u were gonna be the one answering them. o gosh i really hope i get lucky and am going to be at the top of that list but ya i was checking out all the rez and they did all have pluses and minuses and RVC is sooooooooooo pretty! i have another question though, and i know u can answer this one too!!! is their no-smoking and smoking areas? or is it just all non-smoking. cause i don't think i can put up with living where ppl can just randomly smoke

On the applications for the residence do you get to state your preference of a single/double room? I've heard McGill has an awful lot of singles available so I'd like to know.

Also, are there singles available in the new residence? I assume no but I thought I'd ask...

There are some singles available in New Rez. Not a lot, but there are some. In the other traditional residences, (Molson, McConnell, Gardner, RVC), most of the rooms are singles. I don't know about Greenbriar, but Solin is apartment style and MORE houses are shared houses with both single and double rooms.

noelle

Thanks for the quick response!

Do you know if you can specify your preference? I know I'd rather have a single room in the new building but if not I'd rather a single in one of the others. Is that possible to request?

You have a huge list....yours can look something like this:

New Rez single

New rez double

Molson Single

McConnell Single

Gardner Single
6.Molson Double

McConnell Double

Gardner Double

Royal Victoria College Single

Royal Victoria College Double

Solin hall suite

Greenbriar suite

MORE HOUSE single

MORE house double
and so on and so forth.

This list doesn't mean anything, nor is it my personal preferences, it's just an idea ;)

Any info on residences, let me know, because I"ve seen them all and konw people who live in each.

what r the differences between molson, mcconnell and gardner?

Basically nothing. They are the same residence style. I'd not recommend Gardner because it is more of a walk up the hill than the others. But they are all pretty much the same.

what are the advantages to each residence? I heard Douglas Hall is also really popular. Does having a double or single room have any bearing on how well or quickly you get to know people, or at least one person? I know that's kind of a silly question, but one of my main reasons for wanting a double room is to at least get to know one person really well and have someone you definately have something in common with.

Anyone know anything about the Greenbriar apartments? The website says there are singles available, but do many freshman take these? Also, do they have private bathrooms?

Do any of you know of any pictures of the rooms other than what is on the McGill website?

Also, is it possible to get TV service in dorm rooms?

Greenbriar apartments, I think mostly the singles are filled up by the upper year students however if you request a single you never know.

I have some absolutely random photos of RVC rooms from goofing off with a camera with my friends...but unfortunately nothing on other residences. I'd recommend searching through Google or through webshots to turn up photographs of the other ones :)

Here are the advantages to each rez:

Upper Residence: Most traditional dorm style, coed, beautiful view, large number of single rooms available.

Douglas: beautiful residence, traditional style, lots of singles, gorgeous common rooms on every freakin' floor, caf that looks like Hogwarts

RVC: Girl's rez, nice rooms, west wing particularily large rooms, good food, 7 day a week meal plan, VERY close to campus, nice sense of community

New Rez: The largest and nicest rooms, more flexible meal plan, mostly double rooms

Solin Hall: Spacious apartment suites, close to the metro, outside the "McGill bubble", everyone gets own room, big windows, more freedom to cook and stuff, very tight community

Greenbriar: very close to campus, have a balcony, some single suites available, you only live with one other person

MORE houses: I know very little about these :)

here are the disadvantages to each rez:

Upper Rez: have to climb the hill in winter, have to go outside the building to eat, no weekend meal plan, rooms definitely not the nicest Mcgill has to offer

Douglas hall: hill, but not so much as with upper rez. Rooms are smaller than most other McGill singles

RVC: Not quite the party residence that some of the others are (this can be either an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on how you interpret it). All girl's rez.

New Rez: larger floors, ie, not as much floor community as in the smaller residences, from what I've heard it's the party rez. get used to noise ;)

Solin Hall: a 30 minute walk or a metro commute from school--best to allow 30 mintues from leaving home to arriving at school--8:30 classes suck.

Greenbriar: I hear that some of the rooms are a little small for doubles so one person ends up sleeping in the living roomish area.

So here's my dilemma. I don't want to stay in a dorm that's all girls. I don't want to have to commute too much in the morning. btw, how long would it take to walk to main campus from douglas or upper? I don't necessarily need a 7-day meal plan, but I want decent food. Is walking outside actually a real inconvenience, especially in the winter? If it's not so bad, I can deal with it, I guess. New rez sounds best, but it's not even on the McGill map so I'm guessing it's a little further and it's really expensive. Can you eat with a New Rez meal card anywhere else on campus or at the other residences? I want a decent sized room...preferably double. Would you get more personal space in a single room or double room? I'm getting the impression that although Upper is the most affordable, it's not the most..livable? Just my impression from what I hear. Although I hear Molson's actually kind of popular. Which would you personally pick?

what happens after the 8 months lease at residences? Do they just kick u out? What if you plan to stay after the lease period...where do we go?

o yeah..and also..my dad is going to be accompanying me to montreal...get me set up etc. Any recommendations on where he could stay..i mean...can anyone recommended hotels in montreal close to mcgill, while not too expensive and shabby. Prices would be helpful. He plans to stay for a day or two. What would also be the best form of transport after arriving at the airport? Remember, this will be my first visit. Thanks.

mcgill has special deals with some hotels quite near campus, theres a link on their website- and new rez also has rooms for parents.

Yeah, I know there's the Four point Sheraton on Sherbrooke, the Delta Montreal also pretty close, the Hotel Omni Mont Royal near Sherbrooke and Peel...a Holday Inn pretty close by to campus too.

I recall reading something about this on the Mcgill website...I have an exam in an hour and a half, but I'll look it up for ya when I get back.
