Residence

Is new rez the best place for visitors to stay who are accompanying newly admitted freshmen? Keeping in mind taht they don't know the place. If it is or if there are alternatives, how can I book a room online?

when I visited Montreal New rez was all booked and the other residences weren't available, so I stayed at the Holiday Inn, which was very, very nice for the price we got it at-$114/night. The hotel is really close to the school and also really close to St.Laurent, where you can party at night. It's also close to the high way and the old port and chinatown..and...well, and Rue St. Catherines, another touristy street. I believe there's a Marriot right beside it which also offers special rates for people visiting McGill. But if you want to see what it's like at New because you're thinking of staying there, or your friend is thinking of staying there for the year, then try and get a room there, otherwise Holiday Inn (Midtown?) is also very good. I think you can either call for a reservation or book online. Check the McGill website...should be under visiting McGill or something to that effect.

Hey there~ a friend of mine's decided to go to McGill this fall. However, he's kinda lost as to what he should pack. Bedding? Clothing? Laptop/Computer? does bedding include blankets?.. this is tricky business ya kno xP
neway, i'd be forever grateful if anyone could help me out on this. thanx in advance!
*much luv n luck

Tell your friend to check out this website:

It has tons of info about everything a new student could need (including a "packing list" of things to bring). Hope that helps!

aaaahhh~!!!
thank you so much!!! xoxoxoxo!

okay i so did not read all the replies, but i just wanted to mention that if you wanted a single in new rez.........well....don't count on it.

scholarship winners get first dibs at rez. and almost all the new rez single rooms are taken by them.

oh, and mcconnell is coed but guys in one wing and girls on the other... though it's just...across the hall..i wouldn't call it a wing :-P

if you face the city, upper rez rooms can be beautiful. if you face bmh (non gardener), the sound of garbage trucks and etc in the morning will kill. KILL.

i'd look into MORE and greenbriar...though it's completely random whether your house people will make the place great or not, a lot of my friends lived in MORE and it was tight knit and fun.

god knows you can only eat so much rez food..

i was looking at the costs for residence at other universities in Canada and mcgill's is like almost double of ontario ones. Why is that? Are things generally more expensive in Montreal than the rest of Canada?

really? they are expensive but for example, in comparison with queens u, it's not double...

it's cheaper living off campus (which almost everyone does after 1st year) but 1 year in rez is worth it from a social perspective

theres no doubt, mcgill rez is expensive.. probably the most in canada along with queens... but again mcgill is so underfunded that they need these costs

how much does usual apartment renting cost in downtown montreal? Just weighing my options for the future.

I hear it's about $400 a month for rent, although I'm not sure if that's like a one-bedroom apartment or shared. But I hear it's pretty cheap, much cheaper than rez. You only want rez first year for the experience and to ease the transition I guess.

We can find out about our residence assignments now if you call them! I just found out today that I got new rez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ye i am in new rez also

omg you guys are so lucky! I'm so jealous! I haven't found out my assignment yet. Did you guys pick both single and double New? I can't wait! hope I'm as lucky as you guys. crazychai- I'll be crashing at your place a lot if I don't get New too!

I was lottery #202 out of about 2050 and I got a Molson single which was my second choice. A new rez single was my first choice but it's obvious those went pretty quickly...

wow..202 is pretty high up. I put New double as my first, douglas single as second and molson single as third. New doubles don't go as fast as singles, right? Hope I got a good number fingers crossed

On the mcgill_09 group on livejournal I saw people with slots over #1000 getting new rez doubles; that seemed to be by far the most popular.

who do you call??

i called this number 514-398-6368

got into douglas. which was my first choice. HOWEVER, just found out today after actually checking the accomodation facilities at douglas, that it's a 5 day meal plan...which means no food on weekends and i might have to cook! Nooooo!

/starts sweating profusely and bangs head on table</p>

i reckon i'm not going to make it through my first week, probably die of food poisoning.

hmm...i can't cook and i probably have to cook everyday...since will probably be ending up in my last choice...solin

i am number 2013...they can't even find me a place yet....go figure...
