Residency Information

I live in Michigan with my parents, but my father attended UIUC and both parents lived in Illinois the majority of their lives. Therefore, they paid taxes to the state of Illinois for at least 5 years. Does this make me eligible for in-state tuition? Also, my sister lives in the Chicago area..if I weren't eligible for in-state tuition through my parents, how likely would the school be to find out I was an out-of-state if I were to use my sister's address? I'm not trying to cheat the system by any means, but I will not attend UIUC if I have to pay out of state costs. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You are presumed to be a resident of where your parents reside. That they lived here before does not help except there is a possible exception if you completed high school in Illinois and they were residents at that time. The sister angle won’t work as long as parents are living unless you prove she was appointed your legal guardian a year or more before you begin college.
