D was not a partier in high school. On her roommate form she stated that she was a night owl. Freshman year she BY FAR the tamest of the 4 girls. It turned out to be a good thing for her. She got incredible grades 1st year, but she also learned to lighten up and have a good time. Now a junior, I think she balances both sides very well.

My son is now a senior. He was a confirmed non drinker when he arrived at Rice. He also was not that social in HS, although he did have some very nice and smart friends.
As soon as he arrived and went through O week we saw a change. He still didn't drink, but suddenly he had so many friends! He had come out of his shell and started to socialize. Although he didn't drink much through his junior year at least he lightened up and was less judgemental againt other people's choices. Now a senior and 21 he does drink a bit and is amidst tons of probably lifetime friends. Rice took my geek and turned him into a virtual social butterfly. AND he's been wonderfully happy for all 4 years. I can not say how fabulous the residential college system is. It's like a fraternity/sororisty...without the discrimation against others!! Because it's all inclusive you learn to accept everyone and not look to be friends with people who are only like yourself.
