Can anyone tell me how security works in the residence halls? My family got the impression last Saturday that any student could enter any part of any dorm. Is this true? How exactly does it work?

My DS is a resident of Lincoln tower and this is how I understand it: Access to the residence halls is controlled by card access (the "BuckID"). You must have a BuckID to enter any residence hall at any time (although if another student is coming and going at the same time, you can obviously walk through the door with them). Until 9:00 pm ANY BuckID will give you access to ANY residence hall. After 9:00 pm BuckID access is to YOUR OWN residence hall ONLY. There are also lobby desks in the residence halls that are staffed 24 hours (but that is a bit different in Lincoln since the "lobby" is on the 15th floor).

At least that seems to be the theory. No system is perfect, but theirs seems to be pretty reasonable, when it is adhered to by the residents (which is always the challenge on a college campus). Electronic systems always rely upon the compliance and diligence of the users.
