Hi to All,I put my 1st post yesterday on the wrong board(the Johns Hopkins one). A lot of kids looked at it but most were probably incoming frosh and didn't know the answer.I'm going to copy and paste it here and hope that some of you parents might know if charging seperate for internet connection is the norm. Thanks in advance!
I noticed on the JHU website that the school charges $1,033.50 a yr for ResNet computer access in rooms. This was broken down to $119.25 per semester for the connection fee($238.50 per yr),$79.50 per month Sept.thru May and $26.50 per month June thru Aug.Do the math and it comes to the aforementioned $1,033.50.Did anybody get any onfo on this charge when they visited?I know some schools include ResNet in their room/board charges. Thanks for any light you can shed on this !

The schools my boys went to charged for internet connection, although I remember it as being quite reasonable. The charge at JHU seems really high!

At Stanford it is about $10 per month, but it is really annoying because they send out monthly bills instead of just adding it to the room fee.

News to me that schools did this. Kids attend(ed) Carleton & UMich. No charges for dorm room internet connection, nor for connection to wi-fi anywhere on campus. The $$ you're talking about is just a bit less than my annual cable/high speed bill.

Reed doesn't charge either- ethernet/wireless and phone bill is all included in dorm costs
The only thing that could be extra is if you had damage to your dorm room-( even to not filling holes from posters- toothpaste works great) so you wouldn't get the deposit back at end of year.
Printing is also extra I think- but my daughter has worked in the computer lab so she gets free printing which is really nice.
Is the RESNET charge added after the dorm cost or is it already calculated into it?
You might find that if it is added afterward that the cost is comparable to other schools that bill in a lump sum.

That's funny. Two of mine went to Umich and I thought I remember paying for it. Also paid for tv internet connection. Maybe it's something new?

Re: UMich - Must be a newer revenue source. S lived in Markley 99-00. Just checked old invoice, and there isn't a line item for internet. S did not have a TV, but assume that cable would definitely be an extra. He was bummed when he moved into apt that he would have to pay for these "necessities".

Mine lived in Markley 02-03, & 03-04. Most definitely paid for tv cable, and pretty sure internet. Although I remember it as being a one time charge to connect. Not really something you could do without. But it was per room and around $100-200/yr. I guess I should go look it up.

boysmom - I found this site noting a $59 annual charge for activation. They did not have this when my S was there. I can't believe what JHU is charging!

Not charged at Ginnell. Never heard of it at any of the LAC's my kids have applied to including Carlton, Macalester, Swarthmore, Haverford, Tufts, Earlhamn, Kenyon, Dennison. They might only tell yo about it once you are enrolled but especially if it was that high I think it would have showed up on our radar somewhere in the investigation process.

My understanding is that it and cable are free at Amherst.

boysmom, you said you remember the internet connecting fee for 02/03&03/04 to be $100. to $200.That's encouraging.Maybe I'm reading JHU's connection fees wrong(I hope I'm reading them wrong)! It says its $119.50 per semester-$238.50-per year. That would seem in line with what you paid. What I don't understand is the "prorated" monthly fees stated in my originally post.Do you have any idea what that means?

The web site seems clear enough: The cost is $119.50 per semester, period, for the academic year (Sept - May). This is not prorated; you pay for a whole semester even if you use it for one month during the semester.

The summer months ARE prorated, per month: $26.50. Or, you can pay $79.50 for the whole summer.

So, if you go 2 semesters a year, the total cost is $239, NOT $1,033.50.

Thank you,Digmedia, for looking at the website for me and figuring out what they meant. I really do appreciate it:)

Many schools have free internet access, plus a lot are adding free wireless access now.

I also go to UMich. Internet is free, but TV costs a moderate fee (I paid it my first year, but I really hardly ever used it).
