ResNet/Internet at UT

Hi. I was reading the "Living on Campus Guide" and came across "ResNet" section. I was wondering how this internet service works. I visited ResNet's website and found prices: $180, $230, $320 for long session. If we were to NOT subscribe to this internet service, will we not have internet connections in dormitories as well as in other buildings? Is this service called ResNet necessary? Thanks.

resnet is pretty much for wired internet connection in ur dorm room. if you dont get it you wont have internet in ur dorm building. However, u get free wireless internet access anywhere else on campus. i would recommend getting it or you will have to go outside to have internet.

there's not wireless in dorms? I know at least there is wireless in the study areas for all dorms (i'm pretty sure...at least in the honors dorms).

Would it be worth it to pay for more than the first price?

grandpabuzz, those prices: $180, 230,320 are the prices for the internet use plus an e-mail account. So I guess if you don't need an e-mail account, $180 is the best bet?

I've always heard that wireless doesn't work in the dorms but I got free wireless in Jester throughout orientation...

I think we need more information from current UT students. Thanks.

You can get wireless in certain spots of jester, for example there's a class room there where theater arts is usually taught and you can receive wireless. But I think once I was eating in JCL and couldn't receive wireless, and there was another time when I was in my friend's dorm room in Jester East and I couldn't receive the wireless either.

If someone within the dorm has a wireless router maybe its possible to mooch off of their's.

The pricing for resnet is simple, it's based on consumption.

Most people will only need the 180 dollar package, if you're going to be downloading frequently though you may want more. When we had the UT Direct Connect hub it was great b/c you could download movies, music, games without using any of your BW since it was just moving files around on the network, this isn't the case anymore so if you think you're more of a power user who will be DLing frequently then you may need a higher plan.

Also keep in mind that the wireless access you get on campus is limited to 500 mb per week, this is sometimes an issue. I've run out of it before (DLing music or TV shows during class, visiting tons of intensive websites) If you run out of it you're downgraded to dial up speed. You have the option though of purchasing more wireless BW and the extra BW rolls over.

I'd wait and see until you get to your dorm room to see if you have wireless or not.

At the end of april, they installed wireless antennas in Blanton and I magically had very good wireless in my dorm room. Wireless is free to all UT students. Just wait and see what kind of signal you get in your room.

Oh wow, I'm going to live in Blanton this year. Is there anyway I can cancel my subscription if I do get the connection?

I'd be iffy on trying to survive with just 500 mb of bandwidth a week. I suppose if you're going to use the internet rarely or you don't download music then it's possible but if not you'll use up your free wireless quick.

Also on a side note, does the university care if you use Limewire or other p2p programs?

yeah you can use them. I use limewire during class sometimes. they dont block the ports or anything.

I heard that the uni monitors the BW used by students on ResNet and if there is a sudden increase, they do check it out. Is this true?

naw, it's kind of a non-issue because they structure it around plans, is you exceed your bw they just put you on the 2nd class dial up speed (even when paying the $180 dollar and so on plans), a friend of mine had went over 2 or 3 times during the year, nothing happened to him.

I guess for those students living in the supplemental space should wait until we get our room assignments during check-in, since we do not know where we will be rooming in.

Keep in mind DC++ on campus hub (if we have one this year) does not count against your bandwidth because it is hosted on the internal UT network.

A lot of people in april/may got emails from ITS about illegal file sharing on the dc++ hub but nothing ever happened. So yes, they do monitor it but try not to take any action against the students.

i'd be careful about saying that twl...i wouldn't be surprised to see them get agressive about DC++ next year.

When I finished off my semester at UT the main hub was down, the asian hub was invite only, and there was the '2nd UT Hub' which was going to be shut down for the summer session/moved to who ever was willing to take it over.

So I don't know if it was successfully moved or not.

It's interesting that they became aggressive against the UT DCHub because in an older Daily Texan article they were saying that they thought it was okay for students to use DC++ to transfer files to each other. They said that they'd employ new technology to target 'dark networks' on ResNet but it might be all talk, I'm not sure.

That's why I'm saying that you shouldn't rely too much on the 500 mb of BW given by the wireless if you download things.

I think generally you're supposed to be given a 'warning' the first time around anyway. An example of this is that when I was at the Castilian I was caught downloading HBO's Entourage and HBO sent a cease and desist to Apogee (the ISP used by Castilian and some other off campus dorms at UT) in regards to my actions. Apogee just told me not to do it again and nothing came from it.

While I still download TV shows, i've moved from BitTorrent to some more private methods ;)

would anyone happen to know how much BW i would need if i use the internet an average amount (i dont download too much) and play xbox live (about 3times a week)?
