Hey. I'm a freshman at Ohio State (but entered as a sophomore by credit hour) and am looking to either transfer to Cornell, Northwestern, or Georgetown (and possibly Penn, but I realize that's a stretch). I got a full ride at OSU. My ACT was a 33, my grades first quarter were an A and 2 A-'s (two honors classes and a calc 2 class), I was salutatorian of my high school class of about 170 kids, and am majoring in econ. Any chance I could get into any of those schools?

what are your hs stats? im assuming they were good if you were salutatorian, but as a freshman your hs record will be a major factor in admissions, perhaps more than your college grades...what are your ec's?

my hs stats were:
vice-pres key club
captain of the academic team, district champions, featured on Brain Game TV Show, placed in top 10 of 60+ teams
Varsity letters in tennis, soccer, and cross country - captain in tennis
Army reserve scholar/athlete award
Ohio high school athletic association scholar/athlete award
Arion Award for musical achievement
First seat trumpet, "screech trumpet" squad leader
high school most outstanding senior male award
ohio board of regents academic scholarship (highest combined GPA/ACT in school)
7 AP tests taken (3 5's, 2 4's, 2 3's)
AP scholar award junior year
AP scholar with distinction award senior year
only one a- in high school (composition, as you can tell)
3.99 uw gpa, 4.66 w gpa
33 ACT (only took once)
2-time student director of high school musical, lead role senior year
WTOV-TV 9 Award, Top of the (ohio) Valley (featured on TV)
sole recipient of departmental awards in english, business/econ, and spanish
hope that helps! thanks!
by the way...cornell is my first choice because right now i'm getting paid to ohio state, so would like to keep that financial security, and northwestern, my second choice, would make me take out loans

oh, and in college i'm involved in the undergraduate economics society and am going to join a service organization when i got back this week

I hope that's what you meant by stats. If there's info I forgot, let me know.

youve got a really impressive resume going there...jeez...

i think you have a very, very good shot at all three of your schools...as long as you get strong recs., write a good essay and perhaps try to get some more college ec's in there, it will be very difficult for any of those schools to reject you...

something to be wary of however, most colleges are less than forthcoming when it comes to financial aid for transfer students...

I forgot, I also got:
nominated for statewide leadership conference
rep at regional high school leadership program
most outstanding senior male award (for my high school)
got 3 academic letters (45 hours of community service, 3.0+ gpa for 3 years)
plus i worked for two summers at a movie theater

I hope all of these count for something, since they were from high school. Do they really pay all that much attention to high school resumes?

i'm also taking a 500-level class and a 300-level class this quarter. would that work to my benefit or my disadvantage if i only get about a 3.3 or 3.4 this quarter?

Despite the high level of your courses, I think those very selective colleges will expect better than a 3.4.

well, it will probably be higher. that's just a worse-case scenario, i guess. plus, my gpa for last quarter was 3.8, so it would help even it out.

a 3.4 would kill your chances

better to get a 3.8+ taking 200 level classes than a 3.3 taking 500 level classes

^-- agreed.

You def have a shot at Georgetown tho, just make sure you keep above a 3.7 (gtown's avg GPA for transfers)

ok.
actually, though, my classes got all switched around because of prerequisite issues and scheduling conflicts.
so, the classes i'm taking this quarter are Honors Theatre 100, Anthropology 300, and Spanish 103.66 (i placed into the review of 102 and 103).
This is a considerably weaker schedule than I started out with, but should be able to get a 3.7 or 3.8 with it. would that hurt my chances?
Also, i'm now a volunteer with an anthropology grad student. i'm helping him analyze artifacts he found in his excavation of a 900 year old community in ohio. would that be worth a lot on the app?

with those stats, what do you think the best school i could get into would be?

thats a pretty good thing to put on your app...try not to get much less than a 3.8 this quarter, especially if you have to 100 level courses

If I get a 3.8+, do you guys think I could get into Cornell or Penn?
