I am a college junior in the process of applying for summer internships. In my haste I have foolishly submitted resumes and one cover letter with a typo. To be more specific, I submitted 2 resumes with the word "complied" instead of "compiled," and in one cover letter I accidentally wrote "the" when I meant to write "to."

I am rather embarrassed about these errors and I'm wondering if I should even bother to give these places the typical follow-up call in a week or two to check on the status of my application. Or should I just assume that my application went right to the trash and move on?

EEH, Unless you're applying for a position as a proof reader don't give it another thought. Careless spelling errors and misguided spellcheck substitutions are unfortunate, but not deal breakers on the level that you've described. Go ahead and make the followup phone calls and move forward. Good luck! :)

Proof that it is best to proof read your materials after setting it aside for a bit (overnight is ideal). You're more likely to notice such things after some time away.

Still, very possible that the potential employers will not notice and/or won't care in comparison to your credentials for the job. Follow up as usual. If you get an interview, you can ignore the errors or bring in an "updated" resume.
