Resume on Common App?

How important is it to have one if the college makes it optional? I’ve read different opinions. Some say it’s overkill - that the common app questions should cover everything and that the AO may see it as annoying. Some say you should have one if they offer it as an option. Thoughts?

Most people’s resumes repeat a lot of detail already in the common app. Then it is annoying. The admissions officer has to pick through looking for new info. You are usually better off if you have something where you think some added detail is important to put just that info in Additional Info. An example might be a theater applicant with a lot of roles to list. Or a highly accomplished athlete with multiple awards/wins in important competitions.

I used the resume as a document to explain my extracurriculars further than the 50 character limit, because mine aren’t all typical ones like “Model UN”. But if it isn’t adding anything new, don’t bother.
