Ds2 is a rising HS junior. He's already had a couple of occasions for a resume, so we try to stay on top of it.

This summer, he is interning in our congressman's office and loving it. I'm quite sure he'll write one of his college essays about it when the time comes. He also has some good ECs, like president of his class for the past two years, won Model UN awards. He wants to major in either public policy or international relations. Certainly, his activities reflect these interests.

My question is: Do you think the internship should be the first thing he lists on his resume after his education? I think it's the most impressive thing from a numbers standpoint. He's one of four high-schoolers in the office at various points in the summer, along with a few college kids while every school likely has a class president, kwim?

Just curious to hear others' thoughts ...

Sure. That sounds like a good plan. Internships will differentiate your son from other candidates.

I maintained a hs resume for hs (he was too modest and clueless to do so himself). He didn’t really use that doc too much as-is, although it was in a folder at college interviews in case he ran out of talking points. Mostly he used it as reference filling out other college and scholarship applications.

Students may want to take a look at Common App this summer, even if the 2011/2012 version is not yet available. It can take some time deciding how to slice/dice EC into the categories.

My son (a rising college freshman) is doing an internship with a state senator and had an elected position in local government last year. He has many of the same interests as your son. I certainly would emphasize it.

Absolutely. There’s no reason to bury something you want people to see at the bottom of the pile…unless he interned with Rep. Weiner…

I’d put it near the top. The easiest way to do this would be to have categories and then list things in reverse chronological order. I’d probably have things in this order:

Education
Work Experience (include both paid and volunteer)
Extra Curricular Experience
Awards
