Should I write a resume for this political internship, or not?

Hi everyone! Looking for advice.
I just found out yesterday that one of my state delegates is looking for high school legislative interns next year and I’m so excited! I am a rising junior.
In his request, he said to send “a brief statement of interest and a resume if applicable.”
I’ve been very active in the life of my school thus far, being an elected officer in debate team and participating in school plays, as well as babysitting and volunteering at a nursing home. I’m a leader in my school’s young democrats club as well, and this official is a democrat, so that could be viewed as relevant. I also did a tiny bit of work on the Hillary Clinton campaign (canvassing door-to-door). My academic achievements are very strong (maintained a 4.0 throughout high school). But I don’t know if that would be relevant for this internship, or if my Activities would look ridiculous and trivial compared to those with extensive work or internship experience. I’ve been advised by some that in this situation it would be better to just say that I’m interested in political science and gaining more exposure and maybe a brief list of achievements that are relevant as opposed to a resume? But I don’t know. Is a resume applicable? What should it include? Only Activities? Academics as well?
Thanks so much!

I’d put one together, then have it reviewed by an adult who can help you polish it up. Maybe your school GC? Yes, I think an academic and activity section would be good. I might not list the babysitting, but except for that I’d put the other things you mentioned. I’d lead the activities section with a Politics section, and have bullets for your related activities there.

They want high schoolers, so don’t worry about others having more experience. An orderly, no typos resume sent promptly with an email expressing interest and enthusiasm (again, carefully proofread) can get you in the door.

Thanks so much for your advice! @intparent

@intparent i know you likely weren’t too curious, it I did write a short one-page resume, and it did get me in the door! I have an interview Wednesday afternoon.

Way to go! =D>

Congratulations and good luck!

On a resume I would include everything…if you are a babysitter for a family on a regular basis, that shows they have confidence in you and that you show up and do your job. If it is once or twice maybe not, but if you babysit on more weekends than not, then include it.
