So I’ve been filling out the common app, and I noticed that on a lot of schools’ supplemental sections, there’s something along the lines of “If you’d like to upload a resume, you may do so here.”
My question is, is it worth it? Does it make you look better, or will the admissions reps just scrap it? Is it redundant (since there’s so much of that information on the common app) or does it make you look more professional?
From what I’ve read College App readers don’t like when applicants are repetitive. They also don’t like when applicants leave sections blank and then just attach a resume. If you can’t fit everything you need to on the CommonApp then there’s no need to attach a resume too.
Agree, no resume. If you feel it is important to add info, use the Additional Information section (concisely) to do so.
Skip it. That was the recommendation from my kids’ college guidance office.
Thanks @kennaaelysee @intparent @doschicos ! I was sort of leaning towards submitting one, but good to know it’s not necessary. That’ll save me a lot of time.
It isn’t just unnecessary, it is annoying because some if it will be duplicate info. So more work for an already overworked admissions officer.
I had no idea it wasn’t necessary! Should we still send a resume though if a school doesn’t use the Common App? An example would be Georgetown.
(Sorry OP if you think I’m stealing your post, I’m really not trying to!! lol)
No worries @seanman1224 ! I think that’s a valid question.
Something I noticed when I was making a resume to upload was that there really wasn’t any information on my resume that wasn’t included in my common app, besides maybe a few ECs that didn’t fit. I haven’t seen Georgetown’s application, but if it has space for extracurriculars and work experience (which I would assume it would), my guess would be that you shouldn’t bother with uploading a resume. It’s just redundant.
Unless you have more information than will fit on the app (including any additional information section, which you can use as needed), I would not. If they don’t have a section called additional info, you could create a document with that header and upload it in place of a resume, just including whatever additional activities or information you can’t fit into the application.
I would have more information as Georgetown only allows 5 activities…They have a section for skills you possess, but I’m not sure I could maneuver that. @intparent
Just saw this @seanman1224 - My personal opinion is that if you have more than, say, 8 extracurriculars, I would upload a resume. Especially with a school as competitive as Georgetown, every bit of information you can provide to make yourself look better/more well-rounded should benefit you.
I would ask your guidance counselor though, or maybe even call Georgetown admissions. I’m sure either would be happy to answer.
Alright, sounds good.
Thanks for the help, @Dragonfly26!
