So, I found that there was really not enough room in the activities section to put all of my activities, leaderships positions, or to explain some the activites/my roles. As a result, I want to attach my resume which I sent to all of my Common App schools; however, Columbia states "Please refrain from submitting additional information" in their instructions to that section. Does that mean do not attach information later on (in the additional info section at the end), or just not on that particular page? Basically, would it be a bad idea to attach this resume (2 pages, by the way) even though it can/will really help the admissions office to gain a better view of me as an applicant?

There are a bunch of posts on this.

Attach additional information if it adds something meaningful to your app.

^It definitely adds to my app, I am just afraid they will not look favorably on my app because I am not following directions… Also, will they even read it (for that reason)?

They may or may not read it. Keep it on the shorter side for that reason.

There’s an additional information upload section for a reason, they just don’t want you to abuse it. It won’t take anything away from your app (as long as you don’t go overboard).

Personally, I submitted a short, to-the-point paragraph about a family situation.

I was wondering the same thing. Most people told me not to attach a resume because Columbia wants you to make the best out of the space that’s given. Although I’m feeling a little skeptical… You can email the admissions office if you’re really concerned.

send it in. if they choose not to read it, then they just won’t read it. but they are not going to deny you for sending a resume.

Basically I reformatted my resume as best I could into the Columbia application, but I felt some information was lost “in translation,” so to speak, so I attached my resume in “my” formatting. If the committee decides not to read it, I don’t think I’m at a huge disadvantage because I did my best on the app.

So in summary, make your decision based on how you would feel. If you are sincerely worried that the committee will discriminate against your app for attaching a resume (which I highly doubt), then do not attach it. If you are worried that you may be leaving out critical information, do attach it. But a caveat to the second, coming from someone who attached a resume, do your best to fit your information to the original form. It’s just respectful to put your stats into a format Columbia can work with most easily.
