Retake a 2250?

Hi everyone,

So I just took the SATs for a second time and my superscore comes out to a 2250- 800 W, 720 M, 730 CR. The thing is, the second time my CR and M scores went down. I want to apply to Ivies and the like, and since the score pulling mine up is writing (which is not too important) I was wondering if I should retake them.

Thanks!

As my D (with the same score) told me, “why would I want to waste a perfectly good Saturday morning on an SAT”?

One of my subscores went down the second time I took it, too. I don’t think it’s that important unless you think you could do way better, like as in you were ill or didn’t sleep the night before or something. An 800 in writing is nothing to scoff at, either.

This was literally me but with M and W flipped. I retook, because it was lower than my practice tests and was my first try in sophomore year.

Your score definitely won’t keep you out anywhere, and I would only retake if you’re confident you can do better and you don’t want it hanging over your head as a “What if?”

I think most ivies superscore, so don’t worry about it too much.

You are thinking too hard. Don’t waste your time. A recruitment advisor from Cornell told my kid’s school the goal was to take it once.

Anything above a 2250 is good enough for the Ivy League, unless you got a 650 or similar on one section. I know someone who got a 2390 (790 Math) and retook it just to get the perfect (I think it was a bet or something with her classmate). She didn’t get into any of her Reach schools, and I think she applied to several Ivies. She got into her safety but doesn’t want to go there. So retake the test at your own risk.

Your subsections are good enough.

Everyone is correct that 2250 is definitely good enough to apply to Ivy League and similar schools. And I would focus on schoolwork, APs and SAT subject tests for the rest of this academic year. But if you have time over the summer (after working on your essays) and feel like working on vocabulary (Direct Hits, Volumes 1 and 2 and another generic vocab list book), taking a few practice tests, you could give it another try in October. Some people say that people score higher on those October tests senior year just due to maturity and another few months of education and reading under their belts.
