Retake ACT or Focus On SAT?

I'm a rising senior. My PSAT scores were nice considering that I'm from an inner-city school in Chicago ( not to toot my underprivileged-minority-female horn), but since you are required to take the ACT at my school, I focused on the ACT. Guess what? I got a horrible 23, despite a 29 in the reading section and a 30 in the English section. Since those two scores show potential, should I retake the ACT or focus solely on the October administration of the SAT? Or....should I just do both (retake the ACT and take the SAT for the first time)?

This might help:

PSAT
CR- 68
Writing- 73
Math- 51

As you can see, the math section brings me down on both tests..and it's really too late to make a significant improvement. You guys seem to give good advice...at least, more than I can produce with my 16-year old, college-cluttered brain...so I'm asking for your input.

Thanks for your help,

Angel

since you seem to be MUCH stronger with the CR/Writing section, you should focus on SAT. The ACT is basically for those math-good and CR-retarded kids like me.
In your case, I suggest that you buy Grubers or Kaplan SAT Math Workbook and review review learn practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice. Thats preetty much it.

thanks a lot, Kramer. I appreciate the input..I think that's exactly what I'll do.

bronze:

you don't give yourself enuf credit. The math on the SAT is the easiest to prep for..it's essentially algebra I and geom. But, to get a curve, CB makes the questions tricky, to fool kids into obvious, but wrong, answers. Definitely obtain a practice book (cb's book includes actual questions) and look at the solutions. Check out the Xiggi method.

With a little practice this summer, I'll bet you can raise your score 70-100 points, which would be huge, given your fine verbal and writing scores. Good luck.

Blue, you think so?

Hmm...I guess I will practice my math. It just seems like such a futile attempt since I'll be a senior, but I guess it wouldn't hurt, right?

I doubt if I'll raise my score that much, but we'll see.

Thanks a lot.

also, what schools would you recommend? My grades/ GPA are pretty good...extracurrics are fine. My math scores would probably be the main thing killing me..

please tell us what you would like to study

I have a similar problem bronze. My SATs are mediocre, so I'm taking the ACTs hoping I will do better. My friend bombed the SATs and did really well on the ACTs (a 32!). This whole summer I'm studying for the ACTs and hoping I can do better.I would take the SATs in October, and then the ACTs in October as well. Just prep for the ACT after the SATs. You should have a couple weeks I think. Since you've already taken the ACt's you're already familiar with the test. Good luck!

do you all know if theres a sept sat?

The SAT isn't offered in September; however in certain states the ACT is given in September.

I say focus on the SAT and the midwest colleges would probably just convert to get your ACT score.

That's a good idea.

For what I would like to study- English major, minor in international relations.....

say potentially you have a 680 + 730 + 510 = 1920

math is the easiest thing to raise....

say after some serious studying....

700 + 750 + 600 = 2050, which is pretty good, but if you practice math a lot, i don't see why you couldn't get a 2100 (converts to a 31)

practicing math isn't the problem. The problem is retaining what I practice. That's why I generally get good grades in math classes (well, fresh. and soph. years, anyway) but test horribly. Eh...with practice, I think I could probably raise it to a 530. But 600? Only in my dreams..
