Retake ACT or SAT?

I received my scores from my SAT today(Nov 3rd scores), and found out I did worse than the one I took in June. I got a 440 in Critical Reading, 430 in Math, and a 480 in writing. I took the ACT last month and got a composite score of 18. I have applied to several schools already, but dont want to send them those cruddy scores. I want to take one of them again, but dont know which one. I feel I can get a better score on the ACT than SAT based on those scores, but want another opinion. Any advice would be nice!

If you look at the conversion charts of act to sat and it looks like the your sat scores convert to a act score of 18. If you look at your writing only on the sat on at least one chart it comes out to an act 21. However since you said you already have taken the sat twice and did worse the second time I guess I would say take the act again.

I’ve actually taken it 3 times(the first time was freshman year and I got a bubble off on the answer sheet in one of the sections). Im trying to get in to Robert Morris University and dont know if I have time to retake a test. If I just decide to send them one of my scores, should it be the 870 of math and reading, or the ACT score of 18? Or should I chance taking another test again? Thanks for your help!

•Test Scores – 25th / 75th Percentile
•SAT Critical Reading: 450 / 550
•SAT Math: 460 / 570
•SAT Writing: 430 / 540
•ACT Composite: 20 / 25
•ACT English: 19 / 24
•ACT Math: 19 / 25
•ACT Writing: 5 / 8

I got this off about.com so perhaps there is another site that has different numbers.I would send both however if you are only going to send one test. Look at your ACT sub scores and where they fall. You might be better off sending the sat scores as they are closer and your writing sat is in their range. I’m really not sure what they are looking at so that’s why I would send both.

Robert Morris’s average ACT score that is submitted is 18 - 22. And 87% of those freshman with that score are accepted. Does having this low of an ACT score ruin my chances at getting good financial aid and scholarships etc?? Should I just take the tests again? Or save my money and send those in? Thanks for that info btw!

I don’t know anything about Robert Morris and what their merit scholarships require. Financial aid is based on need. Is your gpa in the range that they normally admit? Are you going to study for the act if you take it again? Is there a hurry to apply by a certain deadline? Perhaps you could call admissions and they could give you some insight as to whether taking the test again would help. Perhaps you could apply and then put on the application that you are taking the test again. That way if the test score isn’t quite there they may wait for the new score. However before you do that I would 1. make sure you are going to study before the test and 2. call admissions and make sure that if the current score isn’t high enough that they would wait for the new score before making a decision.

The average GPA of a student applying there is 2.7 which in my opinion is terrible! I have a GPA of 3.74 which is okay(better than 2.7 thats for sure). Its funny that you suggested that because I actually emailed they’re admissions office today. They’re cut-off date for accepting scores is July 1st, but Im thinking if I wait for another test that would bring me to January or February. They’re already sending me letters saying I shouldn’t wait to send in my scores and transcript because spaces are limited. I do really want to take the ACT again, but that Science was terrible, I literally guessed on 80% of the section. My English and Reading sections were pretty good, but I need help on how I should study for the Science and Math portion. Any advice?

The only things I can think of are go to your library and see if they have a act study book you can check out, buy a act study book ( not sure which one would be good) or buy the 19.95 act online study prep from act. Also since your gpa is higher than most maybe you won’t have to retake it.

Alright, thank you so much! I will definitely look into a study book! And so your saying, if I can’t increase my score my GPA will help me out a lot?

I will still retake the ACT even if you increase your GPA

Yeah I’m going to, just that Science section is a killer. People say that I don’t need to know science to do good in that section, but I bet knowing some would help…
