I took the Jan SAT and had hoped to pass 2300- instead, I got a 2250 (780CR, 780M, 690W). I'm not complaining, but what concerns me is the fact that I didn't break 700 on all three sections. I'm hoping to get into Penn (Wharton), Georgetown, WashU, Berkeley... you get the idea. Do I retake to get a higher W score at the risk of my CR/M?

Just for reference, in three years of taking the PSAT I went 205, 230, 240. So I'm evidently a very capable SAT-taker. What's your opinion? Thanks!

wow it is a hard decision because of your extremely high cr and math scores. i would only retake it again if you are certain you can improve writing significantly. for example, i'd rather study really hard and get like a 750 writing score and sacrifice like 30 poitns on the math section-which would still be a 30 pt increase overall. so it really depends. if you can improve your writing significantly, then take it.

At this point the value of the Writing score on the SAT is still very much up in the air at many colleges, so I think you don't need to take it again. But it can't hurt to do so, if you want to. My son's #'s were very much like yours- he took it twice- once in March, again in Oct-writing score went up 50, CR went down 30, Math went up 20.

menloparkmom has a good point. many colleges just look at cr and math, and they treat the writing score as an sat II subject test..

If u feel sure that u can keep CR and math score around or above 750, then go for a retake. U might even be able to get 800 on either math or CR, u never know.

But if u think ur CR or math score will drop down significantly, then just go with what u have.

Thanks! Is taking the SAT II's in May more advisable than the SAT?

well most colleges take your best score for each section, so if you go down in reading and math but go up in writing, they'll keep your good reading/math scores you already have.

Your scores are fine for the listed schools, but if I were you, I'd take it one more time just to raise the 690.

on a random note: menloparkmom, where does your son go to school? i live in the area as well
