Retake SAT for top school?

Is it necessary for me to retake an SAT? My SAT is kind of low CR550 MAT710 WRT600.

Loleo, one thing I learned over my own personal transfer process is that High School transcripts and SATs mean VERY little. Why? High School Transcripts reveal your work ethic, and consistency of academic performance over four years. And, the SATs main objective is to predict performance in higher education, that requires higher level thinking.
So... you can have a low SATs, and a poor high school transcript, however if you perform very well in College (3.4+) they are considered almost anomalies. You make up for them through your college GPA.

Take me for example,
3.0 GPA high school 1410/1600 SAT
then..
3.6 GPA Univ. Delaware
accepted to, william and mary, lehigh, Cornell (guaranteed transfer), and BC

I consider all of these pretty top tier schools... so ultimately, my answer is no... do not retake your SATs. Focus on doing your Homework on each school so you can make reasons supporting why each school is a perfect match for you, and kick some ass in college. You'll get into where you want to go.

just out of curiosity how did you score a guaranteed transfer to Cornell with only a 3.0 gpa in high school?

I would also like to know!

But anyways, I think it depends on the school, but if you really want to go that extra yard and make your application that much more appealing, then why not?

Keep in mind though, a lot of schools do not look too much into your H.S. records, especially if your a junior transfer.

Haha is the fact that I got a guaranteed transfer that surprising? I had one bad grade my first semester in philosophy that killed my GPA. I got a 3.9 gpa spring semester that brought it up to a 3.6, and the reason I used to justify my sub par performance fall year was that I participated in the very demanding sport of rowing (5 am practices, 2 a days etc.)... so I was very active and I performed well, also my essays showed that i did a LOT of homework. so i think they took a chance at me and gave me a guaranteed transfer... I'm going to Lehigh next semester so lets hope i get that 3.3.
I hope I answered your question...essentially they disregarded my highschool performance i guess.

I'm confused, I thought guaranteed transfers were only given for freshman admissions not for transfer admissions...?

me too... but they gave it to me. i think i was like the only one.

I think a low SAT score is going to hurt me in admission process.

Pyune, I'm not calling you a liar, but if that's the case you're the first...

REALLY?... hahaha IF you guys REALY want.. i can copy my admissions letter and make it available as a .pdf thats amazing if i'm the first... it makes me really happy actually.

no, he's not lying. Cornell CALS has an agreement with some 2 year colleges where you are guaranteed for transfer if you complete the prerequisite and maintain a GPA above 3.0.

Cherry Blossom, I think he is saying that because I am coming from a 4 year institution. University of Delaware to be exact. And I am going for their Policy Analysis and Management major.

Do you mind giving us some more information. Again, no one here is calling you a liar or saying we don't believe you, I've just never heard of that happening and would like more information if you don't mind.

What year did you apply for Soph. or Junior?
Were they any special circumstances surrounding your application?
What program in CALS?

Thanks, Pyune and congratulations on your acceptance, whatever the circumstances.

No problem stoneimmaculate. BTW, you guys can call Paul Fisher from the Human Ecology Department if you REALLY don't believe me. He's the guy that granted me the guaranteed transfer option.

Anyway heres the deal.

I had a 3.0 in high school 1410/1600 SATs... very stereotypical asian candidate (besides GPA) when it came to my standardized tests. I had high math average verbal. I ended up going to Delaware because I knew I was going to pursue a high GPA to transfer out in 2 years.

Upon finishing my freshmen year, I ended with a 3.5 GPA, 3.25 1st semester , 3.8 2nd semester. On my 3rd semester here I knew I was going to apply for colleges for the spring, so I crammed my courseload with the prereqs that the Policy Analysis and Management course at Cornell looked for. I did very well this semester, and I believe I was awarded for it. I was accepted to William and Mary, lehigh, BC and Cornell (GT) for the Spring 2008. I dont have really much more information. I believe I had a legit excuse for my sub-par performance in Fall because I was getting acquainted with the demanding lifestyle of Collegiate rowing. I had 3 , 5am practices a week sometimes 5 a week and it was hard to adjust with my courseload. However I showed them that upon adjusting I performed very well and to my potential. The letter told me that I had to take one more lab science and get a 3.3 next semester for my Guaranteed transfer in the fall. I believe I got the GT for either 2 reasons. 1... they considered my first semester an anomaly and want to see how I do for one more semester, or... since I didnt fulfill all my lab requirements... I took phys 133 and phys 201 I guess they dont consider astronomy a lab.. haha. so they just gave me a prolonged acceptance upon completing my lab requirements. Regardless I believe I made myself a very solid candidate that was VERY close to acceptance. I did my homework with my essays and made them know I knew a LOT about Cornell and how I will make use of a lot of the programs they offer.
I was "accepted" for the FALL 2008 for PAM major at the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. I hope this answers your questions.

Thank you pyune for answering my questions. I am inspired.
Thanks. I hope we can become friends.

I am glad my posts helped. Please feel free to PM me with any questions.. I would be more than happy to help. I had a very pleasing transfer experience, and I hope you do as well, good luck.

thanks Pyune and good luck in whatever you decide to do.

hi, i was offered a guaranteed transfer for PAM in HE for the class of 2011. I'm a freshmen at a liberal arts college now. i'm taking all the required classes right now and i just made a very stupid mistake of taking macroeconomics along with calculus and physics! (i'm horrible at math and science)
i'm doing REALLY badly in econ right now, for the second mid term exam, i scored below D.... and I think my average in that class is right now like a C??? !!!! apart from econ, i'm doing well in all the other classes!! and i regretting sooooo much right now for taking economics and jeopardizing my chances of transfering next year!
if i (hopefully) manage to get a B- in econ, i'm not gonna get above 3.3 this semester! would that mean that i'll be regected??? i emailed mr. fisher and he hasn't replied for a week now...i'm so panicky right now... do i have to get above 3.3 EACH semester or for the whole year?

!!!!!!

Read it again... I am only supposed to take 1 semester before I transfer into Cornell so its just THAT semester, but check if you have to get a 3.3 cumulative or not. And if it is cumulative what do you have? Don't e-mail Paul Fisher, just call him and talk to him about your situation because he is the guy that reviews it.
