I am currently a junior. I got a 34 ACT and a 800 CR, 760 Writing w/ 9 essay, and 670 math SAT. I am planning on studying over the summer and taking them again but I don't know if I have time to study for and retake both? If I retook the ACT I would try to improve my 31 on science and for SAT I would focus on math, but fear the other section scores going down. Is it worth it to retake one or both? Thanks

I’d say that it would be more beneficial to take the SAT again. Although, in my opinion, it would be unnecessary to retake either. But, the SAT is the one that you should retake. There are two primary reasons why. First, the 34 ACT looks comparatively stronger, and I’d assume that you would be retaking in order to improve the lower one. Second, the SAT is superscored. This means that even if you do worse in CR and W, if you get a better Math score, then your superscore would be higher. With the ACT, even if you improve your science, doing worse on the other section could still cause you to have the same overall score, as the ACT is seldom superscored. Again, with such great scores it is not necessary to retake, but the better of the two to retake is the SAT.

Thank you!

Yeah same situation junior-to-be here, took the SAT TWICE before >< (bad timing I know, regret taking it so early), got 2030 as a freshman (R - 640, M - 690, W - 700), took a course and got 2130 as a sophomore (R - 730, M - 710, W - 690).

I’m really disappointed at the score increase I expected much more of a difference… but anyway I’m terrified of taking the test again only to get like a 100 mark increase or something… definitely need to shoot for 2250+ this time And I’m not sure what happened with my writing… I expected a much bigger jump there but it seems the only thing that improved much was my reading. When should I retake? I can revise over summer but I’ve got other stuff to do too… thanks folks :/

You are a sophomore. There is no need to start stressing yet about test scores. In fact, by taking the test so early, you are setting yourself up to do better. You can get the 2250. I guarantee it. You have lots of time. Just don’t stress, pick a test date far enough in the future that you can prepare well, and do your best. If you try hard enough, the desired scores will come.

For SAT,apparently you have a fabulous CR score and a good writing score. All you need to do is to practice much more and I promise you will make a great improvement . There is no skills or ploys in mathematic problem solving process. The best way to acquiring proficiency is just repetition. But for ACT, like the first guys have said, it is pretty difficult to make a breakthrough. Thus, I strongly recommend you retake SAT. Btw, SAT, I think, is more useful than SAT

It depends on your strengths. For example, if you are sure that you could raise your ACT score, but absolutely cannot do anything about your math score, study for the ACT.

Your ACT at 34 is already a pretty good score particularly you have no section score below 30 (I assume your science score at 31 was the lowest). You don’t need to retake it, particularly most schools do not superscore ACT. In contrary, your SAT score has an uneven distribution that shows weakness in Math. Of course, you don’t need to submit your SAT score for school application as you have a good ACT score already. If you really want to retake one of them, SAT would be the more logical move. Especially, you may superscore SAT without worrying about getting lower scores in other sections.
