Retake SAT?

Hello everyone

I do realize that this sounds kind of ridiculous, but should I retake a 2310?
I would never do it if all 3 scores were in the same range (like 760-780), but my breakdown is 800 CR 800 WR and 710 M. As you can see there is a 90 point disparity between my math score and my other scores. I feel like I could get math higher and I have heard that Princeton has a particular affinity for 2400s.

What do you all think? I have heard different views from everyone and I need to decide soon for the June test :(.

If you think you can improve your score to 2350 or above, go for it…otherwise, it is kind of a waste. Contrary to popular belief, SAT’s are not hugely important for college; in my opinion, they seem to act as a qualifier.

If you are interested in humanities, keep your scores and your single test appearance. If you are a math/science person, a retake might be a smart idea (not that your scores are weak in any respect).

2310 is a really, really low score for Princeton. You shouldn’t waste money on the application fee unless you raise it all the way to 2400. Only people with perfect scores are even allowed to step on campus.

It’s because of these threads that I am tempted to just ■■■■■ my heart out.

2310 is fine. You can retake it, of course it won’t hurt (especially if you pull up the math score), but you could do well to spend your time on extracurriculars, volunteering, maintaining good grades, etc. Sure, a 2400 looks great on the app, but really, since everyone who applies has above a 2150 at least, everyone who is above a 2250ish is pretty much the same in that respect. Or at least that’s what my counselors and others have told me.
I got a 2330, and was disappointed on math (740), but I didn’t retake it (I didn’t think it was worth the hassle), and I got into to college, so I’m sure if the other parts of your app are strong, the 2310 can’t really hurt you.

@happily… I realize this all sounds ridiculous, but I have heard everything from “are you crazy?” to “are you honestly going to let 4 questions keep you from a 2400?” I’m just trying to get some people’s thoughts because I have to decide whether or not to register. Trust me, I am VERY happy with my score.

I got a 2310, and I got into Princeton this year. You’ll be fine.

My son got in with a 2230, but he had a lot of other good stuff going on. Good luck!

I’ve been trying to make the same decision myself - I got a 2310 as well, with a 720 in math. I’ve decided to retake in May only because it was the math section that was low and I want to major in math/science, along with the fact that I think I have a decent shot at 2350+

I am acquainted with a new admittee who scored just under 2200 - and was not a legacy, URM, development admit, Intel finalist, athlete or from a feeder school but WAS from an overrepresented state. I would be more concerned that my efforts to nail down a 2400 showed a character trait that the admissions people might have grown tired of, namely, someone who fixates on a minor detail while missing the larger picture of what it means to be a high school student. Isn’t there a more productive way for you to use your time and energy?

I know you’re unsure, but, in the end, use your common sense. This situation does not need any asking around for you to realize that the difference between a 2310 and a 2400 is only a few questions. The impact on the admissions officers will be close to nil. You might even come off as test-obsessive if you retake such a good score.

No. Your SAT score is high enough. I think you’re just being ridiculous.

Was that your first time taking the SAT? If you think you can do better, take it again. I got into Princeton with a 2130, there were other things going on (Theatre supplement that I think was supported by the program director). Im not a legacy or anything. If it was your first time, I think you should take it again if you think you will do better!

This was my second time taking it.

i wouldnt take it again

princeton rejects 67 percent of people with ninety nine percent SAT scores…when it comes down to it and ur score is good enough they start looking at ur other things…cuz guess what i got a high score and same with everyone else who is applying

haha whoa. A few months ago, I had the exact same “dilemma” (if you can even call it that), that you have now. I got 800 CR 800 WR and 710 M, and couldn’t decide whether or not to retake the SAT and get a higher math score. People thought I was crazy though, when I asked them their opinions, but I thought my math score seemed kind of “low” in relation to the other 800’s. I did not take the SAT again. Rather, I just made sure I got a great score on the SAT Subject Test in Math. I don’t know if that score mattered or not in the end, but I was recently accepted to Princeton. (I’m not a URM, Legacy or Athlete) So, moral of the story is…definitely not necessary to retake the SAT again with an 800/800/710 in order to get into Princeton.

If I were you, I’d not take the SAT again in June, focus on taking any Subject tests instead, and then after that, have a nice, relaxing summer, but start brainstorming essays during the last month and a half of your vacation. Hope that helps somewhat!

Ahh
I’m taking Math II in May so I won’t know my score by registration time for the June test :(

I think you’re thinking too much. 2310 is a respectable score. Unless you’re thinking of majoring in math or the sciences it shouldn’t matter anyway.

You’d be an idiot to retake. They DONT CARE AFTER A CERTAIN POINT!!!
