So i am still trying to decide whether or not I should retake the SAT I. The first time i took it in January i scored 2200 (730 CR, 800M, and 670 W). In all honesty, those scores are about what I expected, and almost exactly what my PSAT's predicted. My max PSAT was 220 with 68CR 80M 72W. I'm pretty sure that the 50 point improvement in CR came from intense studying of SAT vocab and that the 50 point drop off in writing came from an 8 essay. But quite frankly, an 8 is the best I've been able to do and probably the best I can do.

Anyways, I am looking at a computer science or computer engineering major at schools like Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Rice, Stanford, etc. Will the CS programs/Admissions officers at those schools really care if I raise my writing above 700 or inch my CR up some more? Will it look bad if my math falls off some? And finally, is 2200 within range of merit scholarship opportunities, or do I fall short by 100-200pts (assuming they even exist at the schools i named)?

I wouldn't retake it for the information you provided.
But I'm retaking a 2260 for some B.S./M.D. Programs because my Critical was the one that was much lower.

A 2200 is fine. If you get rejected from any of those schools, it probably won't be due to your SAT score.

If you think you can make a significant improvement (around 100 + points), I would go for it. Why not? But if it's going to improve by like 50, that's not that huge a deal. It's like missing a few questions in each section because of stupid mistakes or running out of time. That can be the difference between a 2200 and a 2250.

Try a shot at the ACT. It seems to be a Math science kid type test, try a practice one, keep mindful of the timing issue which is the drawback.
You may get what you want from the ACT.
