I got a 740 sat ii math, should I retake this? I know i can do better, i just ran out of time and left about 7 questions blank, and I'm applying to top schools. Just looking for opinions.

no, you should not.

740 Math II is not great.

Consider retaking if you know you can do better.

Well, since you are applying to top schools, you should probably retake it. Good luck! (:

I’m wondering the exact same thing.

I know I can do better if I prepare in the time before the November test date, but I don’t know if I have time in my life right now to actually study enough to improve my score!

Argh.

yea math II is a needed 800 for those top schools. Def consider retaking. There are 2 real tests from collegeboard at the book store that you can take to improve.

Depends on what you may be majoring in. If you are thinking engineering or other science/math, there are a lot of kids who get 800s for SATII for MathII, but ask your HS colllege counselor who should be able to give you better guidance.

"but ask your HS colllege counselor who should be able to give you better guidance. "

In other words, she doesn’t know for sure. :D

Ok, if you are applying like NYU then probably dont retake and its all good

BUT IF YOU ARE APPLYING IVIES, MUST HAVE 800 EVEN IF YOU ARE A LITERATURE PERSON

Think about it, it is in the 90th percentile due to good curves, an equivalent percentage wise to a 27 on the ACT

If you’re talking Ivy type…might as well give it an hour of your time to try. Otherwise…no reason.

Regarding comparing a 740 SAT II Math II to a 27 on the ACT…

Tons of people of all abilities take the ACT. Being in the 90th percentile for that test, is comparing apples to oranges with the SAT II Math II. “Top” students (primarily) take that SAT II test. You’ve eliminated…what?..the bottom 75% of the ACT test takers before you pick up your pencil. AND the math that is on either SAT II test cannot be compared to the math on the SAT I or ACT. This isn’t really a valid comparison.

My D:
740 SAT Math
32 ACT Math
math is her weakest subject, but still:

620 SAT II Math I.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. First off, a 740 on the Math II SAT Subject Test is the 73rd percentile for that test. But that’s not the equivalent of the 73rd percentile on the ACT or the SAT Reasoning Test (SAT I). About 1.5 million people take the ACT annually, and another 1.5 million take the SAT I. These are mainly people who are planning to apply to college, or at least considering it. But these are people planning to apply to colleges everywhere and at all levels of selectivity.

Fewer than 300,000 take SAT Subject Tests. These are mainly people contemplating applying to one of the elite colleges that require these tests, or to one or more schools in the University of California system (some pretty elite in their own right). So you start with a smaller, self-selecting group, as is proved out in the statistics: the mean SAT I Math score among all SAT II Subject Test-takers is 619, as opposed to 515 for the entire group of SAT I-takers.

Among those taking SAT II Subject Tests, people will tend to gravitate toward their strongest subjects. Only about half (156,000) of those taking Subject Tests take Math II; that self-selecting group has a mean SAT I Math score of 655, or 140 points higher than the mean for the SAT I group as a whole. Thus the AVERAGE SAT II Math II-taker is at the 88th percentile among the larger group of all SAT I-takers. You’re just competing against a much smaller and much stronger group.

Within that select group, a score of 740 (= 73rd percentile) is nothing to sneeze at. On the other hand, it probably won’t help you get into MIT for engineering or physics. Bottom line, I agree with those who say whether you should re-take depends on where you plan to apply, and for what program. For most schools and most programs, a 740 is excellent. For the very top math/science/engineering programs and the most selective schools, it may not be enough.

do you guys mean that a score like a 750 isn’t good enough for top schools?

“Wrong, wrong, wrong.”

i was saying 800 was 90th percentile, and I understand that the sampling is different, but still it isn’t good.

“do you guys mean that a score like a 750 isn’t good enough for top schools?”

pretty much, but only on that subject test

I’m in a similar situation: received a 730 on my Spanish SAT II. Is this competitive for the Ivy League schools (or schools of this caliber)?

I will anyways take the SATs again, but I don’t know whether to re-take the Spanish test or focus on another subject instead.

ok that makes sense i remember hearing math II is a hard test but is curved a lot
