Retaking a prereq course Bad?

I'm currently studying biochemistry at a community college and have gotten all As and 1 B. Unfortunately, I did not do so well in my calculus 2 class and my professor posted a NP. I know i should retake this course to get a better grade, but should I tell him to change it to a letter grade as it is a prerequisite for biochem? And will this bad grade dramatically affect my chances getting into UCs like Davis,SD, or Irvine? Overall, I know I will do better since my math is my worst subject.

Also, what is the average gpa for biochem majors transferring from cc to uc?

A NP doesn’t affect your GPA. It’s not bad to retake a pre-req course. Just make sure that when you retake it, that you retake it for a letter grade. I had to retake General Chemistry 1B at my college (first time I withdrew from a class taught by an incompetent professor and got a W on my transcript), and that did not affect my chances of getting into Davis.

But this is a “NP”. Won’t this have a worse impact than a “W” especially it being a pre-req course? And if so, how much?

Here’s a: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major Fall 2010.
It’s from UCLA.

Don’t worry about it. I got two D’s in major pre-req’s. Retook them. Got A’s. Got in everywhere I applied.

Davis, SD, and Irvine all offer TAG agreements anyway.

A NP is the same thing as an F and if it is a prerequisite for your major you have to retake it since an NP is an unsatisfactory grade. Once grades are posted I doubt that you can change your grading option and do not understand why you would even want to change to a letter grade since it would be an F which would destroy your GPA. You can not leave that grade on your transcript without repeating the course and passing it if you wan to get accepted at a UC.

I always thought that you need a letter grade for prerequisites for UC. Isn’t this true? And if I decide to take another route (going to different school, changing majors, etc.) that does not require calc 2, do I still need to retake it?

The reason you would want to retake the class is to demonstrate that you can pass Calc 2 since right now your transcript indicates that you can not pass it. If you want to continue in a major for which the course is a requirement you have no choice but to retake it and pass it. If you change your major to something that does require Calculus and you can live with an unrepeated failing grade on your transcript, whether it affects your GPA or not, than there is no compelling reason to retake it. In fact, if you believe you are simply incapable of passing Calc 2 (probably more budding science and engineering careers have come to an untimely end in this course than in any other) than it would not make sense to repeat it since you would just be compounding the damage by accumulating more failing grades.

You are the only one that can determine whether you want to continue in your present major and what your chances are of passing Calculus 2 if you retake it.

I think I will retake my Calc 2 course later on. Math is the only subject I’m struggling with, but its probably because I don’t take much time to practice… Thanks for all of your advice.
