Retaking Algebra 1

I'm going to a private prep school for high school and they require a math placement test for new freshmen. I took algebra 1 in 8th grade and planned on taking geometry for ninth. I have my test in about an hour and I highly doubt that I'm going to pass it. Is it really bad if I have to retake algebra? I'll be in algebra 1 advanced.

Thanks

no, it's not too bad. colleges won't look at it an say "oooo, this guy retook alg I his freshman year." if you want to be a year ahead of your grade in math, just take geometry (or whatever is next) next summer, so you'll be in alg II (or whatever comes after) soph year.

alg I is a very important base for learning math, and if you do not pass the exam, that will show that you do not know it well enough, so it is better for you to retake the class and know the material well than to be a year ahead with sketchy knowledge, which may create problems in future math courses.

anyway, you'll have a higher gpa if retaking the course is really easy for you.

Well, I retook Algebra I four times, and geometry twice, under slightly different circumstances from yours.
It was good for me because it meant I understood the subject better in the end :D

Good luck on your test!

Fizix, which math class are you taking now?

I went to take the test but there was a misunderstanding I guess and she thought I wanted to take it to get into Geometry Honors, so now I'm just taking regular geometry. :D

yay!

My brother took Algebra II four times and failed it all four times. XD

It's really good to have a strong understanding of Algebra I, so a repeat can be the best. It will look fine to colleges---- just try to take math all 4 years 0f HS.

good for you :)!

I retook Algebra as a freshman, then Geometry as a sophomore, Algebra II as a junior and then dropped math Senior year. Probably not a great idea, but I despise math more than anything else. Luckily I did decently on the Math portion of the SAT.

Differential Equations/Matrix Theory and Discrete Math/Graph Theory last year.
This year I have to take Math 1 since Caltech doesn't accept credits...

I started my "repeating math classes" cycle a long time ago.

Don't go into the test doubting yourself! I self-studied Geometry before my hs placement test so I could skip into Algebra 2 Trig freshman year, but I completely freaked out and just didn't do the Geometry section. Turns out I could have passed, and been in Calc this year, but instead I had to suffer through a whole year of Geometry (easiest math A ever) and I'm in PreCalc right now. Not too big a deal, but still, just shows what happens when you don't trust your abilities.

(Darn the lucky people who get to take placement tests.)
This is what I did:
Algebra I in 8th (Didn't count toward HS GPA at all)
Geometry-H (100) During the summer
This year (my freshman year) I'll take Algebra II-H and Pre-cal-H
Next year I'll take AP Calculus BC (And AP Calculus AB just to raise my GPA) Plus AP statistics.
Pax et bonum,
James Crowe

That's dumb to take AP Calc AB and BC. You're taking the same course twice. In the same year, no less. No college is going to look at this and say, "What a smarty!"
