Retaking Calculus 1 next semester what should I do differently?

I got a D+ in calc 1 last semester so obviously I'm taking it over. I should have taken pre calc first but I didn't. I also should have dropped it when I had the chance but what really killed me was my final which was worth 50%!!!! Calc brought my gpa down to a 2.5 but I did decent in my other 3 classes.

I studied very hard for every single test and quiz. I went to office hours and tutoring almost every week. I studied my notes after every lecture and only missed one class. I barely studied for my other finals because I focused on calc.

Is this D+ going to be a huge red flag for med schools even if I retake it??

Many people say I should really take Calc 2 but that sounds like a really bad idea. I think that's just setting myself up for failure. Plus I'm planning on taking Stats my 2nd or 3rd year so it's not like I only have one semester of math.

I don't know what else to do when I retake calc in the spring. Any advice???

PS. I HATE CALCULUS!!!!

take precalc in the spring or in the summer, and then retake Calc 1. (It was foolish to jump right into Calculus without a strong math background.)

did you read the book? did you pay attention to what the professor said when he wasn’t doing an example?

doing these things will help you get a good feel for what limits & differentiation & integration are, which will help you figure out what to do when you need to calculate these things on homework and exams.

Don’t say you hate calculus, that’s a bad attitude to be having. Being able to do all the example problems + problems your prof gives you (past exams problems, etc) should be ample preparation. Make sure you know how to do problems from scratch, not just merely reading through explanations.

You have to know a lot of rudimentary math to be successful in calc. And it has to be down pat.

Stuff like x^-n= 1/x^n…and so on.

I found just brushing up on 10th grade algebra helped me significantly.

Also, you MUST do plenty of practice problems. It is the only way to learn any math based course.
