Retaking CC courses at transfer institution?

So I'm transferring to UCSD Revelle as a BC&CB (biochem & cell bio) major from a CC. I was wondering if I could retake a pre-req course that I got a C in (at my CC) once I transfer to UCSD? I wanted to brush up for MCAT review anyways, and I'm not too hyped about having an ugly C on my transcript. Also, do med schools frown upon this?

You can’t, unless that grade was a D or an F.

Medical schools count everything, and I mean everything. So, I would just stick with that C.

What if I take it credit/no credit? Maybe this will emphasize the “review” part.

Maybe that would be possible, I mean, you’re paying tuition, lol. You should ask tho, I’m sure they would allow that but not for a new letter grade.

is there a way to change a C to a D so i can retake the class?

masteryoda - there really is no way to change your grade lower. But you can certainly ask your professor to change your grade lower for a particluar reason. Just remember that retaking a course will show on your transcript when you are looking for admissions decisions at grad school.

dudez - you cannot take the course again for a higher grade or credit/no credit because you have already received credit. Since you did not receive a D+ or lower, that means you have passed the class and no longer can take it.

But if you just want to review the class to be better prepared for your MCAT in some way. What I do to get better prepared for classes I take for the next semester or intercession is to audit some classes for free. Just ask the professor if you can be able to audit the class beforehand and give him/her a reason why.

Thanks MakeBank! Auditing classes sounds like such a good idea!!

Just to be clear, there’s nothing in the UCSD system that will prevent you from taking the class. You can take it P/NP, for a grade, whatever. And during the school year it doesn’t cost you extra money, because you pay “full time” tuition whether you’re taking 12 credits or 22 or more. If you’re auditing it–just sitting in–the professor might decline to have your work graded.

You can retake the class, but you won’t replace your grade in anyone’s eyes. And I have no idea how it would be viewed by professional schools.

Thanks for clearing that up KGZotU!
