So I am a transfer student who was not totally ready for college life last semester. I did well at a community college and had the GPA to get into the business school at my university but I was short one class. Everything would have been fine but I got in trouble last semester, got caught up partying and being lazy all the time and didn't do good enough in any of my classes. This semester I have to retake all but 4 credits! The one that really ****es me off is calculus because I got an A on the final and did good on all the tests but my homework grade brought me down to a C. So stupid. Has anyone else had to do something like this? I feel like that was a total waste of time and money. I'm still dedicated to getting my business degree but this is really bugging me. Also, will this really hurt my chances of getting into grad school?

Uhm, if you’re at the point where you’re taking calculus, you should really know enough math to be able to figure out what percentage of your grade homework is, and know how individual assignments can hurt you. I’m not sure why you’re ****ed off when you didn’t do the homework, unless you meant that in a mad at yourself sort of way.

It sounds like the best thing you can do now is buckle down and focus on school. Either write homework and studying into your schedule, or tell your friends you can’t hang out until you’ve done your schoolwork. Don’t go out partying if you’ve got a paper or something, and go to bed at a reasonable time when you’ve got early classes. If you want it, fight for it. Don’t worry about grad school right now, worry about getting yourself together next semester.

Start by realizing when its time to party and when its time to study.

If you want to go to grad school, your grades are numero uno. You need to get recommendations from your professors.

I definitely meant I was mad at myself. No need to be condescending. I understand my grades were a reflection of the time and effort I put into my classes. I’m just seeing if anyone else had to retake some courses after a bad semester. Also, if anyone has, how they recovered from it.

Why do you have to retake Calculus? A grade of C isn’t failing. I would concentrate on retaking D’s and F’s. You paid for the Calculus credits, a C isn’t great but not horrible, and those are credits you could use on a new class instead.

Yeah but I need a B or better to get into the business school, in that class. I would much rather take another class but if I was to go on and just leave that C, all the business classes I took at a community college would be a waste.

Well, calculus should be your easiest to re-take, since you know you were doing well except for the homework issue. Learn from the experience, and don’t let it happen again in any class. You are jeopardizing any financial aid you receive, etc, since there are SAP requirements you must meet in terms of GPA and credits completed. Seek tutoring, go to professor office hours, ask others to study with you, go online to websites that can help you learn content for classes, etc. Take the bull by the horns and get on top of this.

I have a friend who did just that - partied a lot, nearly failed, and retook a lot of her classes. My understanding is that when you retake the class, your new grade replaces the old one, correct? So you could potentially improve your GPA by retaking them and you wouldn’t ruin your chances at grad school.

Sorry you’re in that situation - that sucks, but at least you sound like you learned from it.
