Retroactive withdrawal?

My grandmother died around the time I started winter term and I was very affected by it and was gone for weeks for her funeral and just wanting to be with my family. By the end of it I received F’s and no credit on my classes. Due to her death being in Mexico I’m not really sure what type of paperwork I’ll need. I can get her death certificate and medical records stating she was sick. But what other types of documentation would I need? I never spoke about this with my counselors; I only met with them when it came to choosing my classes so none of them knew at the time what happened so I can’t get a letter of support from them.

You’ll need to go back and have a chat with your counselors. Make sure such a withdrawl is even possible at your college. Plan for the worst case scenario, meaning you’re probably on (or will be put on) academic probation and in danger of losing scholarships.

A death certificate is a good start as far as documentation goes. If you were grieving for weeks, though, and to the extent you failed all of your classes, a note from a therapist confirming you were in treatment would go a long way.

You should talk to your academic advisor and the Registrar at your college. It may be too late to ask for a withdrawal (it would have been way better to handle this during the winter semester) but it doesn’t hurt to ask. As noted above you should be prepared for the worst case scenario.

You could make a convincing argument for withdrawal if your grades were very good before your grandmother passed. If not, then it would sound to me to be more like reaching for straws and trying anything to get out of the responsibility for doing well in college.

If this was winter term, did you return to college for spring term and, if so, how did you do in the spring?
