Revelle College

So I was admitted into University of California - San Diego as a Chemistry Major in Revelle College. Since UCSD has always been my dream school I was happy to get in. I intentionally signed up for the Revelle College because I read that it was a college that prepared the medical students really well. However, after reading many posts about Revelle college I am worried about how the college really is.

So in your honest opinion, how is Revelle College? Is it really that bad as people put it to be?

Revelle doesn’t prepare you to study medicine any more than the other colleges. But it probably also isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. It really depends on what you’ve seen people saying about it. I’m guessing they’re complaining about there being a lot of GEs or that the GEs are hard.

In reality, you MAYBE might have saved a couple classes if you were at a different college. That probably won’t turn out to be a big deal, and it is what it is at this point. I can’t speak for the GEs from first hand experience but the reality is you will be taking all of your GEs with people from other colleges (except for your writing class). People are just complaining about the GEs they have to choose from. That to me is really silly. People are complaining about their GE classes when they expect themselves to spend years in grad school. Your GE classes are like stepping stones in your educational path to expand your horizons and gain more knowledge as you move further into your field of study. Students voluntarily come to this university to gain the skills they need to take on high level career positions yet at the same time whine and complain when they’re faced with actually having to work at things, especially when they are the basics. If somebody is going to whine about their GEs then what are they going to do when they get to med school? I’m guessing that med school will be WAY HARDER then those lower division introductory classes. That’s not to say that somebody who is struggling with their GEs doesn’t have a chance to get into med school, I’m just saying that sometimes people really need to put things into perspective and really put their full effort into improving. Working hard is what will help people succeed in med school, not weaseling their way out of trying on things.

I’m not saying that YOU were complaining about GEs (and none of the rest of that was directed at your personally), but I just don’t want people to fall into the trap of listening to others complain about GEs. I’m also not saying the GEs won’t be hard. I’m just saying it’s time to set up to the plate instead of shying away from things like I see others do.

That was just my guess of what people were complaining about. If they were complaining about the housing and food, well that’s a different story. :P

My son is at Revelle and it was far from his first choice when he applied. He was really bummed when he learned that he was placed at Revelle. Now he loves it. True, the GE requirements are the most difficult, but totally doable. He was in the “old” dorms his first year - and they’re pretty crappy, but getting redone soon from what I hear. NOW he’s in the on-campus apartments at Revelle which are FABULOUS… I couldn’t believe how nice they were when I first visited.
Would he still rather have been placed at a different college??? yes, probably, but he’s “dealt” and is really having a successful college experience. I wouldn’t let the housing assignment be a very significant factor in your choosing UCSD.

Thank you for the replies! Honestly I was worried about the GEs but now I realize that it is something that will prepare me for the future. I’m going to look at this in a positive direction! I’m really happy I got into UCSD and hearing from you guys has helped me realize how lucky I am. I shouldn’t be complaining about which college I got into. Thank you for your input!

No problem. Good luck!
Funny, my daughter just got accepted too and wanted Muir but got Marshall. She went through the same anxiety about it… I think it’s normal, but a good lesson in “going with the flow” and being flexible.
(and being grateful that you got in!)

^ I wanted Muir and got Marshall as well - then I went back to my application and realized I had accidentally put Marshall as my first choice… facepalm. I don’t suppose there’s any way I can have them switch me? LOL

^To switch you have to first finishes the college’s writing courses and also prove that switching helps you graduate earlier.

@Kings, I wasn’t entirely serious. If I do end up attending SD, I’m sure I’ll be more than happy at Marshall. But thank you! :)

@stupiddorkyidiot if you decided NOT to attend ucsd, would you be willing to give up your Marshall college spot to me? Im a current ucsd student. I’m trying to switch from Sixth college to Marshall, let me know. thank you!
