I am a little confused. So i am a freshmen with structural engineering major. On the 4year plan it says that i should take a language first quarter and do language again over summer, but this time it says 3rd semester next to the word language. Revelle site says we need to finish a 4th quarter of language. I guess this means we need to take 4 quarters for a language? or am i wrong? If we really do need 4 quarters of a language, then y does it say for my major's 4 yr plan to take language for 1 quarter and then take a 3rd semester language over summer? what does the 3rd semester mean? Does it mean to take that language for the entire summer in order to complete the language GE? If u guys dun know what i mean by the 3rd semester, go on revelle's site and check the 4 year plan for structural engineering 09.

BTW, im not taking language first quarter becuz..well it didnt fit in with my schedule. Im planning to start winter quarter. For winter ill be taking math 20F (im doing my math in FDE order), physics 2A, and humanities 1. Im just wondering, is language B/BX hard? Cuz i think my other 3 classes will be enuff work as it is. Also, can i even get into B/BX cuz i didnt take the foreign language placement exam yet.

Be great to get some answers cuz im kinda worried bout this and it's confusing me.

the major 4 year plan isnt specific per college, its just a general 4 year plan for all 6 colleges. Being Revelle, we have to take more GE, so you need to find room to squeeze in more GE classes with your major classes.

Also you are kind of confusing because they are quarters, not semesters, so im losing your thought train here, if youre taking them at a Community College you would take 3 semesters of the language, if you take it here, you take 4 quarters of the language.

sry if im confusing but thats exactly what it says on the 4 year plan. It says 3rd semester for some reason. Thats y i said go check it out at the revelle site. But i guess we do needa take 4 quarters of a language (im planning to take spanish) then? So if i go for B/BX for winter break, can i get in without take the language placement exam? Also, do u think i can handle it given that i alrdy have to take physics 2A, hum 1, and math 20F?

As for the completing this req, can i just take them over the summer and will they count as taking the language class during a quarter?

it says 3 semesters’ equivalent because most schools run on the semester system and don’t have the exact equivalent of 4 quarters’ worth of a language unless they drop out on the middle of the semester … soooo people taking it at a semester-based school will HAVE to complete more of the language (suckers).

what do you mean “go for B/BX for winter break” ? and the language placement test isn’t a bad thing – it saves you time and effort by placing you in the appropriate class.

and generally we also make poor commentators for the “do you think i can handle ----” questions. some people do fine handling 24 units, others can barely take 12 … everyone’s different.

I asked Revelle about this earlier, When you take the placement exam, it puts you in a certain class. From the placement I got recommended to Spanish 1C/1CX or something like that. So just from that I knocked off 2 quarters of spanish. So I only have 2 quarters to finish. But the thing is to satisfy that requirement I have to finish 1D/1DX to finish the GE. You are allowed to move up one level from what the placement test put you in. So I decided this fall quarter to take 1D/1DX to just get spanish over with .

So if u get placed in a higher level foreign language, u knock some quarters off? That relieves me of some stress. That was one of the things i was wondering about. I didnt take the placement exam yet and im actually planning to take language during my jr year cuz…some of the stuff GEs that i was recommended to take that year on the 4 year plan…well i completed them with APs and what not. However, is it possible to take the placement exam, for ex, next summer, and then take language the following year. For example, if i get placed in B/BX next summer as a result of the language placement exam, can i take B/BX during my jr year without having to take the placement exam again? Or do i have to take it again in order to do so?

my opinion is that you should take the placement test when you actually anticipate taking the class. sure, you can place into 1B/1BX right now, but what if you forget all your spanish in the next two years? (going to TJ occasionally isn’t enough when all you’re using is “dos cervezas, por favor”) you’ll enter 1B/1BX and know nothing, and the entire class will be a struggle.

i’d highly recommend that you not waste your high school spanish and get the language requirement done with now … and who knows, you might like it enough to continue beyond the language requirement?

are all of the placement exams for each language about the same. I plan on taking spanish. U think it will also be all MC on basic vocab and grammar? and how many Q’s were there?
