what is the exact difference between the two? Which should I take to fulfill my R&C requirement?

There is a huge difference between the two.

English will focus on literary criticism and rhetoric will focus on examining how a text conveys its content. Someone can write their PhD dissertation on the difference so I'll leave the difference at that.

I took rhetoric r1a and I loved the class. I've learned to write a coherent essay, and learned more than I did than the english classes i had in high school. they actually teach you to write better, not just hand you an essay and expect you to come up with some fabulous essay.

Generally speaking, do you think that the Rhetoric 1A/1B class is easier or harder than the English1A/2A?

what would medical schools like? hey ab-med, could you call UCSD or UCLA again and see which one they would like?

I've heard the English department is very intense, and I know that the rhetoric department is fairly laid back. Rhetoric will probably be different from what you've experienced before, as might English, but I imagine it will just be a more methodical version of what you're used to already.

I imagine med schools do not really care about this one particular class. I'd be far more concerned about your pre-med course grades, MCAT scores, and letter of rec- even your personal statement is probably more important than if you took an English or rhetoric class.

isn't a year of english required for med schools though? i was just wondering if i should take rethoric instead.

A good question, one that particular medical schools will have to answer for you.

Is this a rhetorical question? ;)

calX, have you taken a rhetoric class? If so how was it?

drab, on the contrary many people i've met seem to agree that rhetoric r1a/b is more difficult than english r1a/b, though IMO it totally depends on the professor.

I could barely handle English classes back when I was at Cal, rhetoric seemed really daunting. If my verbal skills were a bit better back then, it would have made a very interesting subject.

hey ab-med, how many units are u taking for fall semester?

I believe it, unlimitedx. It isn't really laid back, but I think it is relative to what I hear about English, and has a different set of skills than most are used to dealing with. The concepts are tough, the writers often complicated and difficult, the teachers' vocabularies complicated and nuanced.
