First, condolences to everyone who was rejected or waitlisted. You will still go on to do great things. Keep at it!

Second, to those new members of the Rice family, welcome!

Answering some questions I’ve seen on here:

Housing: Each residential college saves beds for incoming students. Unfortunately, Transfers are at the bottom of the priority list. All incoming freshman/exchange students will get beds (except in the most extreme circumstances, or by personal choice), and then the leftover beds are assigned to transfers. The order of priority is: Athlete/International Transfers, Out of State Transfers, Texas Transfers. The first (International/Athlete) is a pretty set rule, while there is some fluidity within the second two categories. The likelihood of you receiving housing as a transfer is probably less than 50%. Certain colleges have only enough room for incoming freshman/exchanges while others (my own college included) have an extra or two because of the way room assignments turned out. Invariably, there will be attrition over the summer, and beds will open up. If beds open up after you have been assigned to your residential college, sometimes you can be offered to switch residential colleges in an effort to get on campus housing (this will likely be after the first week of July).

Residential College Placement:
You will be randomly assigned to a residential college and informed in the beginning of July. Please fill out the information forms accurately, even the rooming ones (unless you have no intention of living on campus), as this is what Orientation coordinators use to place you with (potentially) a roommate and (definitely) an orientation group.

You cannot request to be in a college with your friend, unless your friend is also an incoming new student, or you request to room together. You can request to be in the same college as a DIRECT (sibling, parent) family member, or NOT to be in that college.

Orientation:
Orientation is a week long, the week before classes start, and likely very different from your previous orientation. It’s half academics (there’s tons of transfer specific info, sessions, and advising), and you register for classes on the last day. The other half is pretty much an introduction to the residential college system. You’re paired up with 6-9 (depending on your college) other new students, and upperclassmen advisers (2-4 depending on college). Their job is to teach you what the residential college system is all about, and to give you a social network from day one. It’s a ton of cheering, late night food, and indoctrination. I think it’s awesome! (but I’m a little biased).

Facebook:
To my knowledge there isn’t a transfers fb page. You may technically be affiliated with the class of 2014 or 2015, but you would probably get more out of joining the 2016 facebook group. The 2015 group is a little bit inactive at this point, and since you’re going to be hanging out with the incoming freshmen for an entire week, it’d be cool to get to know them now! You’re really in an awesome position to easily connect to both your incoming class (because of orientation) and your graduating class because of your transfer status. Some of the best people at Rice are transfers! Here’s the facebook group if you’re interested:

If you have any Orientation specific questions, feel free to pm me. I’m one of the student coordinators of my college’s orientation.

Cheers!

Accepted as a sophomore transfer. I found a house 10 minutes from Rice, newly remodeled with new paint, new wood floor (granite on first floor), all new appliances and furnitures. Very reasonable rates ($500 monthly, utilities included). I need two roommates to make it work. PM me if interested.
