Thank you @Ultra39w85 for making this thread. Please post ED results here.

Please post any results and detailed stats here rather than in the 2024 ED general thread

Decision: Rejected

SAT I (breakdown): 1520 (R: 750, M:770)
SAT II: Math II: 780
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.94
Weighted GPA: 4.62
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 10/612
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Stat (5), AP Euro (5), AP Government (5), AP Psychology (5), AP Language (4), AP Literature (4), AP Calc AB (4), AP U.S. History (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis): Spanish SL (6), Music SL (5)
Senior Year Course Load: IB Music, IB History, IB Calc/AP Calc BC, IB TOK, IB Physics, IB English, AP Computer Science

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): City’s youth orchestra, School wind ensemble (first chair for 3 years), Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, Spanish tutoring club (officer for 1 year)
Job/Work Experience: Math Instructor at a learning center since July
Volunteer/Community service: I do most community service through National Honor Society (tutoring, volunteering at elementary schools, various events in the community) I didn’t show much dedication to a specific volunteering service.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Honestly, I’m not sure. I’m a harsh critic so obviously I thought they could have been better. I would say they were solid, but definitely not a wow factor on my application. Advice: Work on ideas for your essay NOW. I came up with a lot of good ideas after I had already submitted my application.

Recommendations: As a really shy person, I don’t talk to my teachers and counselor as much as I should. Therefore, I don’t think the rec letters were that strong. I am a well liked student, but definitely not a favorite.
Interview: did not request (forgot about the deadline)

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Psychology
State (if domestic applicant): Florida
School Type: suburban, semi-competitive (not as crazy as some other schools out there)
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Upper middle
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none lol I was hoping ED would help me out

Strengths: Grades were relatively good (majority A’s with a couple B’s) and classes were challenging all 4 years. I’m an IB student. SAT score was pretty good (not the best but within range of Rice). Showed dedicated to music with piano, band, and orchestra.
Weaknesses: SAT Math II score could have been higher (although I applied for psychology). Received a B for the first semester in 3 classes. Junior year, all my AP scores were 4’s. Could’ve had more leadership that was meaningful to me. I wish I had dedicated myself over the 4 years to one specific volunteering activity to show that I actually cared about it. Should have built stronger relationships with teachers/counselor. Essays could’ve been more standout/creative.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was a strong applicant, but I don’t think I showed enough unique qualities. Obviously test scores and grades are important, but I don’t think I focused enough on community service and showing strong leadership. To future applicants: Write about something unique that has shaped you into the person you are today. Really show your personality through your essays.

Note: If there’s anything that I’ve learned through this process, it’s that no matter what college you attend, you will be okay. A Rice admissions officer once told me that “Where you go to college doesn’t matter. What you do at the college matters.” Rice was my dream school, but maybe it just wasn’t meant for me. Everything happens for a reason.

My son accepted for 2024 class just released results

Reflection: I’m so grateful to be able to attend such an amazing university. It’s my dream school. I hope that other students who are maybe insecure about their GPA or intimidated by the stats of other applicants will find the courage to give their dream school a shot too! Don’t get caught up with the achievements or sky-high stats of those around you, just do what you feel is right for yourself. You can do it!!!

Strengths: Essay, recommendations
Weaknesses: GPA, achievements don’t stand out much
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted maybe due to essays

Figured I might as well do this, since I spent so much time on this website stressing about getting into Rice.

Decision: Accepted

Objective

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): UIL Math (Team Captain 12th grade);
Cultural Exchange Program (participated for 3 years); Math NHS (Historian 11th grade, VP 12th grade); Engineering team for robotics competition, only senior year though
Job/Work Experience: Tutoring from 10th grade - now; worked at a local restaurant as a host since June of this year
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered in ESL program (only 12th grade), a couple church activities
Summer Activities: Nothing specifically over the summer
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Personal essay- 8/10, about how academic competitions fed my love of learning. Personal perspectives- 7/10, talked about how my devotion to philosophy gave me a unique perspective to life. Why I chose my major- 9/10, about my love for math and love for engineering reconciled with CAAM. Why I chose Rice- 9/10, about how a university is defined by its people, and Rice has the best people (didn’t say it as bluntly as that).
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 9/10. This was from my physics teacher / Ac Dec coach / UIL Science coach. He showed me the letter, and it was very flattering.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10. From my former calculus teacher and sponsor for Math NHS, so she knows me pretty well and thinks highly of me. I didn’t see it but I’m sure she wrote kind things.
Counselor Rec: Probably not great. I come from a large school (3500+ students with about 10 counselors), so she doesn’t know me that well, but I imagine she knows how to write rec letters pretty well.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: 8-9/10. I got a humanities major (odd that they paired him with an engineering major), but we were able to relate in our study of philosophy and religion. He was really friendly and a great conversationalist, and I think this was one of the stronger parts of my application.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Computational and Applied Mathematics (w/in school of engineering), but might switch to Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
State (if domestic applicant): TX
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Very large, somewhat competitive, public school. We’re probably the highest-quality school in our area.
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Upper middle (qualified for full tuition scholarship under Rice Investment, probably barely)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope

Reflection

Strengths: Definitely my testing scores. SAT, SAT subject tests, and AP tests were all pretty easy for me, and that was by far my strongest part of the application. I also think my essays and rec letters were probably above average. I’ve also showed a lot of interest in Rice (meeting alumni, campus visits, etc.), so I think that helped.
Weaknesses: Extracurriculars. I don’t have much volunteering experience to go on, and no internships / practical experience in my major beyond a couple competitions I’m involved in. I’m also not very diverse for an engineering major, so that might’ve been against me as well.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my devotion to learning (in essays and rec letters) / ability to learn (in test scores) pulled through. My test scores are well above average, so those probably carried pretty hard. I’m still kind of in shock about getting accepted; I really didn’t think I would get in.

I’m very fortunate to have been accepted. Rice has been my dream school for years, and the reality of attending school there next year is mind-blowing. Good luck to everyone applying RD, and hopefully I’ll see you in a few months.

Decision: Accepted

Objective

SAT I (breakdown): 1520 (750 r/w, 770 m) not submitted
ACT (breakdown): 36 (EN: 35,M: 35,S:36: R: 36)
SAT II: Chemistry 760, Math II 800
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A
Weighted GPA: 4.53 out of 5
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 92/700ish (like 13.3%)
AP (place score in parenthesis): No scores submitted
IB (place score in parenthesis): No scores submitted
Senior Year Course Load:
IB:
Chemistry HL
History of the Americas HL
English Lit HL
Economics SL
Mathematics SL
French SL

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): N/A

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): City youth orchestra 4 years (highest chair acting concertmaster, highest orchestra). First violin in the highest All-Regional orchestra, first violin in highest All-State orchestra.
Job/Work Experience: Temporary Clerk at Rice University’s Controller’s Office over the summer before senior year.
Volunteer/Community service:
480 hours Counselor-in-Training at a Rice kids summer camp(freshman and sophomore year)
Assistant Intern at a Health Museum (junior year)
250+ Hours hospital volunteering (MD Anderson and Texas Children’s, both through selective programs) Senior year
Summer Activities:
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common app: 6.5. I wasn’t the most confident in this one, mostly because it was rewritten fairly close to my time of submission because I was also unhappy with my first draft.
Rice Supplements: 8/10. I put a lot of time and effort into writing these ones and created connections between my future plans and how Rice would facilitate the achievement of my goals.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: (10/10) Jr Year Physics teacher (he’s a Rice alum, and I was basically one of his star students). I’m sure he wrote very enthusiastically about me even though I didn’t see the rec letter.
Teacher Rec #2: (7/10) Jr Year English teacher. I didn’t see her letter either but I am almost one hundred percent sure she wrote good things.
Counselor Rec: My counselor rec was most likely pretty general as I come from a large school and she had many other students’ letters to write as well.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: I interviewed on campus with a senior-year student. He was a double major (philosophy and something else I don’t remember). I thought my interview went really well and he was really personable. I’m sure this played a pretty large role in my ultimate result.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Cognitive Sciences
State (if domestic applicant): Texas
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Very large public school. Most kids in the top 6% end up going to UT Austin or something though, and Ivy and t-20 yield rates are very low.
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Upper middle
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection

Strengths: I transferred from a very small competitive public high school to my current one during the summer between sophomore and senior year and did fairly OK at that school (alongside a transition from AP to IB courses LOL). I wrote a really (like, REALLY) good essay on why I transferred because common app prompted it, and made it clear that transferring was a decision I made for myself in order to better facilitate the achievement of my goals. Another strength could be my consistency in the extracurriculars I chose to participate in. Also, despite my (relatively) lower GPA compared to the top-performing students in my class, my standardized test scores served to kind of counteract that.
Weaknesses: I didn’t submit any AP or IB scores despite having taken 5 AP courses and 1 IB test before sending my app in, and I don’t have any awards or anything like that. I also am not a high school athlete or have considerable involvement in school clubs / have leadership in those activities. I also thought that compared to the rest of my class I would look weaker because most of the top 6% have GPAs around 4.71 ish.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was accepted because I showed the ability to decide what I want for myself and act on it (transferring high schools) as well as consistency in what I am aiming for in my future goals. Also because my interview was pretty good and my rec letters were great.

Just remove the ‘a’ below.

Decision: Accepted

Objective

SAT I (breakdown): 1500 (700r/w, 800 m)
ACT (breakdown): 34 (36M, 35E, 33R, 31S)
SAT II: Physics: 750, Math 2: 750
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):4.0
Weighted GPA:4.17
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):1/85
AP (place score in parenthesis):Spanish Language (5), Spanish Literature (5), World History (5), Environmental Science(5), US History(5), Biology (5), Calculus AB (5), English Language (3).
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP physics 1&2, marching band, calc BC, English 4 (Dual credit course with south Texas college) Federal Government (also DC), Texas Government (DC), Economics (DC), Design, College/Career prep
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
AP scholar with distinction (only 1 test away from National AP scholar)
UIL 5A Math Regional Champion team member
UIL 5A social studies regional second place team member.
UIL Marching band 5A Area G champions and state qualifier.

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
UIL: Math & Social Studies (capt. of SS team)
National Honor Society (Vice President)
UIL Advisory board (Co-Treasurer)
Color Guard
Job/Work Experience: Intern at the Mexican Red Cross in Reynosa, Tamaulipas.
Volunteer/Community service:Mexican Red Cross, tutoring at school, Rio Grande Valley Butterfly Center and other local organizations. Total of about 110-120 hours
Summer Activities: Band camp and summer classes
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Commonapp essay: I’d say like a 9/10. It’s about the divorce of my parents and my struggle of reconciling my two cultural identities (I’m half white/half Mexican) and me trying to find a meaning to my existence. I also tied it to the political turmoil happening in Mexico at the time (this was when the zetas and the gulf cartel were battling for turf in northern Mexico) and how that affected my life. It was very cohesive despite all of these different elements.
Supplementals: for the first one (8/10) I discussed why I want to study physics and philosophy and mentioned several extracurriculars and additional classes at rice that interested me. For the second one (8/10) I wrote down my thoughts about rice as I learned more about the school and I emphasized it’s cultural and intellectual diversity.
For the last one (9/10) I wrote about how being a member of two different cultures and growing up along the US-Mexico border led me to become more open minded to other cultures and I included an anecdote about how I came to realize that Mexico and the United States are not that different.
For the Box I uploaded a picture I took of two Oxxo stores next to each other (Oxxo is a chain of mini markets in Mexico). The picture is beautiful in a way that is hard to describe.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: My AP physics teacher. I worked really hard in her class and demonstrated a passion for physics so I imagine she wrote about that
Teacher Rec #2: My AP calculus teacher/ Math UIL coach. I’ve known him all four years of high school and I figured he’d have good things to say about me.
Counselor Rec: can’t say much about this one but I imagine she wrote nothing bad.
Additional Rec:
Interview: (8/10) I think it was alright but I felt like I said something that made me come across as lazy. I did emphasize my knowledge of rice, my passion for my major, my eagerness to be exposed to different cultures, and my community service experience.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Double major in Physics & Philosophy
State (if domestic applicant): Texas
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Small Early College High School. For my extracurriculars I competed for a larger more competitive school in the same district.
Ethnicity: Half White/ Half Mexican
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: I’m in a weird family situation and it’s kinda hard to explain, but I didn’t get any financial aid.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): n/a

Reflection

Strengths: I’d say my essays were the best part of my application. My interview was alright. My AP scores were high but I dont think colleges consider AP scores to be super important. I’m also ranked 1 in my class but it’s a small school.
Weaknesses: My test scores aren’t as high as the other people in this thread but I think they land in the range of an average rice student. Subject tests could’ve been better.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that my unique background and my well rounded interests and activities were probably the features that Rice liked about me.

@nickenchugget Congratulations on your acceptance! You seem like a great fit for Rice, and hopefully you’ll be able to attend, despite not receiving any financial aid. All the best to you.
