Figured I might as well do this, since I spent so much time on this website stressing about getting into Rice.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Personal essay- 8/10, about how academic competitions fed my love of learning. Personal perspectives- 7/10, talked about how my devotion to philosophy gave me a unique perspective to life. Why I chose my major- 9/10, about my love for math and love for engineering reconciled with CAAM. Why I chose Rice- 9/10, about how a university is defined by its people, and Rice has the best people (didn’t say it as bluntly as that).
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 9/10. This was from my physics teacher / Ac Dec coach / UIL Science coach. He showed me the letter, and it was very flattering.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10. From my former calculus teacher and sponsor for Math NHS, so she knows me pretty well and thinks highly of me. I didn’t see it but I’m sure she wrote kind things.
Counselor Rec: Probably not great. I come from a large school (3500+ students with about 10 counselors), so she doesn’t know me that well, but I imagine she knows how to write rec letters pretty well.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: 8-9/10. I got a humanities major (odd that they paired him with an engineering major), but we were able to relate in our study of philosophy and religion. He was really friendly and a great conversationalist, and I think this was one of the stronger parts of my application.
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Computational and Applied Mathematics (w/in school of engineering), but might switch to Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
State (if domestic applicant): TX
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Very large, somewhat competitive, public school. We’re probably the highest-quality school in our area.
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Upper middle (qualified for full tuition scholarship under Rice Investment, probably barely)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope
Reflection
Strengths: Definitely my testing scores. SAT, SAT subject tests, and AP tests were all pretty easy for me, and that was by far my strongest part of the application. I also think my essays and rec letters were probably above average. I’ve also showed a lot of interest in Rice (meeting alumni, campus visits, etc.), so I think that helped.
Weaknesses: Extracurriculars. I don’t have much volunteering experience to go on, and no internships / practical experience in my major beyond a couple competitions I’m involved in. I’m also not very diverse for an engineering major, so that might’ve been against me as well.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my devotion to learning (in essays and rec letters) / ability to learn (in test scores) pulled through. My test scores are well above average, so those probably carried pretty hard. I’m still kind of in shock about getting accepted; I really didn’t think I would get in.
I’m very fortunate to have been accepted. Rice has been my dream school for years, and the reality of attending school there next year is mind-blowing. Good luck to everyone applying RD, and hopefully I’ll see you in a few months.
