Joesm112, you can read the posting on the other blog that has all detail stat of the accepted and rejected applicants. it is like throwing a dart. my son was rejected. I saw another applicant (runthetrap) who has the highest academic qualification I have seen but was rejected. I think interview may be important although Rice says optional.

Joesm112,
The problem with “chancing” others is that applicants should be taken within the context of their school.

Just an example, if one school offers all of the APs and another school offers no APs, students at the second school are at an obvious disadvantage. However, that is not to say that a college would not accept students from that second school; students from the second school are competing not with students from other schools but rather with students from their own schools.

Of course, there is a common ground that applicants share, and that is test scores. Here, I think you are very solid.

Long story short, don’t let these “chance me” posts from others fool you. I never really understood the purpose of those posts, as you are really just competing with your classmates. Just try to stand out in your own school. You can do this academically or, as I did, by trying to write very unique essays for both the Common App essay and the Rice culture essay. This is my understanding on how this all works.

ChrisMCC,

I think runthetrap may be “overqualified.”

Also, I feel as if the essays are of great weight, because that is where you can set yourself aside from other applicants. Test scores don’t say much by themselves, no matter how high they are.

This doesn’t matter. Other than Architecture and Music which have special application procedures, you apply to Rice University as a whole, not the school of engineering.

Getting in is a result of your application and stats and not the school/program you plan to major in.

^ With that said, I did have Rice’s Director of Admissions tell me that applying as certain majors can be harder…

Do you look at senior year grades? If so, would C or B turn off a weighted GPA 5.0?

just wondering now since the interview deadline has passed, to request an interview, were we supposed to turn in a for the interview itself or the entire common app to rice before dec. 15th?

I was going to do an interview, but since I didn’t even start one one of their supplements before dec. 15th, I thought there was no way I could submit my entire app before the December 15 interview deadline.

which application were we have supposed to turned in before dec 15th?

@jc
yes every school looks at first semes senior grades (i would recommend not getting a C and trying to minimize Bs cause senior year grades are most correlated to how well one does in college accroding to some college study or soemthign)… it gets sent to them wehn ur counselor/dean send them the mid-year report from jan to feb timeframe after ur first period of grades is over…

@dream4life
after one does their application, rice has a online quick application for people to request on campus/off campus interviews…its just basic like whats ur name, where u live, etc but u had to have it done i think…its on their website under interviews section and u go to off campus… i did several weeks ago but i have had no response yet but because there must be so many requests im waiting hopin i get one.

I don’t know if interviewing really counts for much. I got rejected, and my interviewer personally sent me an email afterwards telling me I was phenomenal and that I was going places.

Admitted. Anyone else?

I wish I could dream until April 1…
I was rejected.

Rejected with a 2300 SAT and near-perfect GPA. D: I’m very disappointed.

Admitted- 35 ACT, really personalized essay, great extracurriculars, no interview. Still seriously surprised to get admitted, especially because 2 other guys from my class (of just 64 total people!) also were admitted to Rice.

Can’t decide between UT-Austin and Rice. Only reason I’m considering UT-Austin is because it’s ultimately cheaper than Rice. Anyone else having a financial problem???

@heathrfeathr, Interesting. UT-Austin was actually about the same price as Rice for us – a little over $52,000 for OOS Engineering at UTA, and very little scholarship money, $4000. Son has already turned down UT because of cost and we are awaiting Rice’s need-based aid commitment before deciding where he will go.

@yakker, I live in Texas so I get in-state tuition, but I’m leaning towards Rice because of the overall college experience there

Admitted. Perfect scores and GPA, though, :D

@yakker
If you receive at least $1,000 of scholarship money at UT Austin, they waive the out of state tuition. Please check, but I’m pretty sure that’s what I read on the website.

Thanks for the info. I wish this had been the case for us! Sounds like a really great deal, but unfortunately they say these waivers are hard to get even if you are awarded a competitive scholarship because each college has only a limited number to give out (most likely reserved for stellar applicants who have significant need). They also say that your award letter will mention whether you were selected for a waiver and basically not to hold your breath if it does not say you got one! Needless to say, son’s award letter did not offer a waiver, and I called financial aid and was told the $52K figure was what we could expect. Bummed.

What other schools is he looking at? My son has it narrowed down to Rice, Wash U, and UT Austin.

@yakker

@parenting3 – Nice choices. Can’t go wrong with any of those. Good luck. Even after ruling out a couple, the list of possibilities is long here, including Rice, Georgia Tech, A&M, Colorado School of Mines, and Arkansas, which made a very generous offer for its Honors College. – a wide variety of schools with solid engineering programs. I think son may have ruled out CSM after a second visit there a couple weeks ago, really liked A&M during our third visit there yesterday, and will visit Rice for Owl Days next week and then decide. At present, Rice is his first choice, but we are awaiting a final FA offer to decide, and I have to say A&M really made a favorable impression yesterday. So . . . short list is now probably Rice and A&M. The decision-making process would make a great psychological or social study, I’m certain!
