Rice Class of 2018 (HS Class of 2014) ED/RD Thread

BCH2014-

Yes, I know someone who was deferred, and they got in at RD.

awalker46351,

Nice to meet you, and good luck to you as well! :)

Hi y’all, I’m Jordan, and I applied ED and want to major in Psych. I go to a highly competitive high school with a 98.65/100 GPA and have taken the hardest possible classes every year. I play baseball, am a coordinator in yearbook, lead and founded an ethnic club, and participate in an array of other activities, including a plethora of community service. My test scores were a 222 on the PSAT, a 2114 on the SAT, and a 34 on the ACT. I also have a mother, 2 aunts, and an uncle who went to Rice. So…I hope that’s good enough :)

Good luck to everyone!

JordanTS23, you have a strong legacy case with good stats.

Just received Esther acc. Not much is on it yet, but it looks like the decision date is finally set!
For financial aid, for Early Decision applicants it says “Award notice by December 15”

So there we have it! 12 days and 4 hours until 5PM December 15th!

And I say 5PM because historically this is the time decisions are released.

I was notified of Esther account today because I applied for aid. According to fina@rice.edu, I can track my receipts with it…

I submitted my Common Application on October 4 and the Writing Supplement on November 10. I have received no confirmation from Rice that it was received or any link to an Esther account. Should I worry? Is it appropriate to contact them?

Sorry to post here, but I am getting worried.
Thanks for any input!

I received an email to set up my Esther Account today as well!

FYI the football team is hosting the Conference USA championship game this weekend. They are playing Marshall. The game is televised on ESPN2 @ noon EST… Tune in! The winner plays in the Liberty Bowl against most likely either Ole Miss or Vandy… Go Owls!!!

tempe39 - Rice/Baylor

hey tempe39! good to see a fellow rice/baylor RD applicant. Did you fill out a interview form yet? (if you are wanting one tht is…) also, did you recieve anything else other than a confirmation from rice university about recieving hte COMMON APP… i recieved no reply about them recieving my rice baylor. i submitted that on dec 1 like 10 and got a automated reply from the machine cause everyone is out for thanksgiving at the time…if u got word back… then i got reason to worry…

@matrixsurgeon I already had my interview, and it went really well!
I applied October 19th and I haven’t gotten anything from Rice except an email thanking me for applying with no further information.

temp39, nice to hear that you already had an interview. i hope to get one. I did one for stanford (alum) and it was fun! and ok good that we are in the same boat right now in terms of notifications/confirmations from rice. if u dont mind me asking, what state u from? im gonna go out on a limb and guess texas cause rice is a big percentage texas?

Hi, decided to jump in here…I applied ED and now just anxiously awaiting…I got an Esther acct. today. Does everyone get one of these? Can anyone tell me if you submitted both SAT and ACT with writing will they only consider the highest of the two for admission purposes? I did much better on my ACT and would like them to not even consider the SAT.

Major: Physics
GPA- 5.13 w, 3.85 uw
Class Rank- 6th out of 418
ACT- 33
many EC’s- Band-Head Drum Major, Choir, Debate, Acadec, leadership positions and tons on comm. service hours.

what are my chances?? Good Luck everyone!

Thanks!

For admission they will use your best score from either the SAT or ACT, which ever is higher. The lesser scores wont detract from the rest of your application. They just ask that you send all of them in. I was in a similar situation where I only submitted my ACT tests (because I did much better on them), but I emailed Rice and was asked to submit all my SAT scores even though I didn’t take the subject tests.

@mwcgeheee I thought that if you take ACTs and SATs but you decide to ONLY report/send ACT, then you can send your highest and not worry about the SAT portion as they only state you are required to send them if you decide to use SAT instead of ACT. i picked ACT which i took twice and because we arent required to send ALL act, i just sent my highest act score…am i missing something?

S applied yesterday, RD, from Wisconsin, Bioengineering, 32ACT, 1/247 in rank

@mwcgeheee
Thanks, that’s what I thought and now we wait…
I was told to send all my scores and they will superscore.
What about the Esther acct., have you guys got these this week also?
I applied for Rice/Baylor also in October and received an automated reply that it had been received, but nothing further.

Yes Esther accounts are out, or I received mine anyways. There’s nothing much to do yet except for checking the status of your financial aid documents that were sent in.

Looks like Judgement Day has been set for December 15th! 11 more days!

@matrixsurgeon No, I don’t believe you are required to send in all of your ACT scores, but I was told by an admissions person that Rice asks that you send all of your scores anyway, even if they are not your highest. They aren’t looking to penalize you for lower scores, so I would send all of them in if possible and not worry about which one is the highest. They will see your highest score from either test and use that in their decision.

As far as choosing either just ACT or SAT, I don’t think you are REQUIRED to send in your SAT scores if you submitted scores for the ACT+writing, but Rice asks that you do anyways. I’d send them in if you still can. Hope that helps!
