Rice’s RD apps up by 30%, Brown’s 9%
This number is high 27K. Number of seats to applications is very high compared to UPenn.
Hi guys! Is there a solid date that Rice RD will come out? I checked the website but maybe I was looking in the wrong places because I couldn’t find it haha
They didn’t tell ED when decisions would come out until about a week in advance, so I wouldn’t expect a solid date from them until early or mid-March. @Faulkner1897, who is usually right (or pretty dang close) about these things, predicts March 22.
I think it was @Houston1021 who made that predication but they are usually pretty good at this too!
March 22 would make sense if Rice holds true to past patterns. As @Faulkner1897 said on another thread, all past decision release patterns may be out the window this year given the large uptick in applications.
Rice only offers ED Binding and RD non-binding!
Update: We submitted a letter of appeal with Financial Aid on Jan 18. They said, it will take 2 weeks to get a reply. After that 2 weeks, we were told it would take another 2-3 weeks. After 3 weeks, they said they will eventually get to us with no timeline. Still very stressful situation for us. So, as of today, we do not have a resolution to our appeal.
Also, admissions asked for the midterm transcript. What are they looking for? The good thing is that my daughter’s midterm transcript is better than what was submitted. Are they going to ask for the final transcript?
Colleges always request midterm and final transcripts, even for ED students. This is to make sure that the student is still maintaining their academic focus. It is rare to get rescinded, and Bs won’t do it, but if a student drops to Cs and Ds that would be a problem!
For Rice accepted students visit - I gather that, if the timing is the same as last year, it will be Thurs - Fri April 11-12. Anyone know if students should plan to be there first thing on Thursday? And stay through Friday evening (depart Saturday)? We are flying from northern VA, and I’d like to book some flights on Southwest, and a hotel (both can cancel or change if needed). Thank you!
Yes, it’s usual to get a request for the midterm transcript for ED, EA. And final transcripts are usually requested too. Gotta make sure the kid graduated from high school.
@janes2019 - last year Owl Days began on Wednesday afternoon and ended on Friday afternoon. I do not have the schedule for last year, but our flight landed at Hobby at 3 pm or so on Wednesday, and we left on a 5:30 pm flight on Friday. There are many activities for the prospective students Wednesday evening, so Wednesday would be the best arrival date. Prospective students are matched with a host on Wednesday and Thursday nights, but not Friday night.
My daughter’s host texted her a few days before Owl Days, and met her at the Sallyport/in the quad when she arrived.
Two people in the admitted student FB group have called admissions and said that Owl Days are the 11-12. No Wednesday this year
Good info - and a good reason to wait until tomorrow to book tickets!
Is there something similar to Owl Days for transfers?
Transfers participate in O Week (orientation) in August with all of the other new students.
very late but I got accepted under ED and wanted to share in case this helps other people!! this is what is on my application (I have more and things have changed but it’s not on my application so I don’t think it would help)

Volunteer/Community service: I was a TA for a Vietnamese class, Girl Scout
Summer Activities: Externed at Weatherford
Essays: This is what I really wanted to talk about. I wrote one of my essays (the 500 word one) about VIDEO GAMES! With examples, I wrote about the importance of teamwork and trusting others with one video game and the challenging puzzles and “thinking outside the box” lessons I learned from another. I think this balanced my heavily academic application with something more relaxed!
Other essays: My personal statement focused on accepting my identity as an Asian American after a trip to my parent’s home country. My intended major essay is about why I want to pursue CompSci and the Rice experience essay used my time from SOAR and used specific examples like the Shepherd School of Music and the study abroad programs they have at Rice.
Teacher Recommendations: One was my Calculus teacher that I had my junior and senior year. She really respects her Cal 3 students for returning lol so I think her rec was pretty good 9/10 and the other was my CompSci teacher that I had my junior and senior year and I was very friendly and nice with him and when I told him I wanted to pursue CompSci he was introducing opportunities to me so I think he likes me 8/10
Counselor Rec: Was pretty good!! 9/10
Box submission: I submitted a picture of a project I did in my CompSci Principles class. It was a program that made a pixel art of a dog and I chose this because it was cute and it showed my code in the picture as well

I got a full ride with need-based but seeing my very qualified (and arguably more qualified) friends get rejected and waitlisted with ED and RD makes me worry about whether I am good enough for Rice. But I got accepted so hopefully this goes away soon
@nhnil If you were accepted you are smart enough to be there. My daughter felt the same way, especially coming from a public school with many kids at Rice coming from big name boarding schools. She ended up on the President’s honor roll this first semester so she feels great now! You obviously know how to work hard and study, keep that ethic and you’ll fit right in. During O-week they’ll talk about imposter syndrome, how many kids feel exactly the way you do. Rice is a very inclusive place and you’ll do great!!!
