•Essays: good I guess?
•Teacher Recommendations: I didn’t see them, but they were probably pretty good. Also, I submitted two even though I think only 1 is required, but I’m not sure how much this would have affected the decision.
•Counselor Rec: Probably great, I know my counselor was really excited when I said I wanted to apply ED to Rice, and she said no one from my school has ever been accepted before.
•Additional Rec: none
•Interview: It went a lot better than I thought it would, and the interviewer (on-campus, so it was a Rice senior) was pretty easy to talk to.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:

•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Idk
•Where else you are applying or have already applied: Fordham, USC (carolina), Northeastern

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I did a lot of research on the school and the application process in general, so I think that helped. I also demonstrated an interest in current research projects at Rice during my interview.

Choose One:
Decision: Accepted

Participation in and now organizing weekly extracurricular biology class (10, 11, 12)

Family International Travel (9, 10, 11, 12)
•Essays:
I think they were pretty good. I spoke about my internship and why I love science, my experience inclusion facilitating, a very heartfelt essay about why I feel I truly belong at Rice, and about a trip to India and the interaction I had with the local culture there (sounds pretentious here but it was actually an essay that I’m very proud of). My box submission was part pun, part biology. They’re definitely very me. After I submitted, I realized I had a typo in one of them though and that worried me.
•Teacher Recommendations:
Anatomy and physiology/freshmen bio/internship organizer teacher-I think it was probably very, very good. She loves me and has had me for four years. We’re very close and I know that she thinks very highly of me. AP bio teacher-I think it was pretty good, though not as strong as it could be.
•Counselor Rec:
I think this was very strong, my counselor knows me very well and likes me a lot.
•Additional Rec:
My mentor from my internship wrote an additional rec that I read over and was really amazing.
•Interview:
I did an on campus interview with an admissions counselor that went super well. We got along very well and laughed a lot.

Other
•State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
•School Type: Public
•Ethnicity: White
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: Pretty high up
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I had a TON of contact with the school

Reflection
•Strengths: My scores are good and I think my essays were strong and showed a lot of personality. My recs were also strong and my internship is amazing.
•Weaknesses: That typo and my GPA/class rank are kinda on the lower side.
•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I really showed that I belonged at and fit in at Rice.
•Where else you are applying or have already applied:
U Chicago, Tufts, Swarthmore, Haverford, Pomona, Wesleyan, Oberlin, Occidental, Reed.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I’m thrilled, but to everyone who didn’t get in, you’ll be happy where ever you end up. I wish everyone the best of luck. Just be yourself and put yourself in the best light, but if you don’t get in, don’t blame yourself. Applying to colleges, especially selective ones, is hard to formulate.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
•SAT I (breakdown): 2000 (Reading-720 Math-630 yeah I’m Asian and my worst subject is math Writing-650) I didn’t send my SAT scores. I will forever despise the SAT. Sorry, those hours of SAT were torture for me. It’s just like the amount of sections just wore out my brain. I really prefer the ACT’s four sections.
•ACT (breakdown): 33 (English-32 Math-32 Reading-33 Science-34 Writing-10)
•SAT II (place score in parentheses): n/a
•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): (2 out of about 600)
•AP (place score in parentheses): (World History-4, U.S. History-5, Chemistry-3, (I didn’t want Rice to see this, but it got sent in my Questbridge application because they recommended I submit all my scores, and then I realized that I couldn’t take it out before I sent it to Rice. Since I got accepted though, I don’t think the 3 hurt me very much.) English Lang.-4
•IB (place score in parentheses): My school doesn’t offer these.
•Senior Year Course Load: Band, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Government, AP Economics, AP Biology, AP Seminar, AP English Lit.
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Questbridge Finalist, National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Honor

Subjective:
•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):Wind Ensemble (1st band-1st chair bassoonist), Marching Band, Indoor Percussion, National Honor Society (Treasurer), Interact Club, TMEA Region Band, Tutoring, Yuan Ji Wu, Hospital Volunteer
•Job/Work Experience: n/a
•Volunteer/Community Service: Over 300 hours of volunteering from hospital, animal shelter, babysitting, tutoring, library, NHS related Activities. (I didn’t tell Rice that I volunteered so much though, I just told them about the volunteer stuff that I was involved in the most.)
•Summer Activities: Hospital Volunteer
•Essays: It took me so long to write these. I just couldn’t come up with a good idea. I think one of my essays was kinda cliche but I still tried to convey my personality to the admission peeps. The other essay talked about unconventionality, which is pretty important to Rice. You know, unconventional wisdom and what not.
•Teacher Recommendations: They’re both teachers that I really loved, so I think they were good
•Counselor Rec: She’s really nice and amazing, but I didn’t know her very well when I asked her because she was new. I’m sure her recommendation was good though.
•Additional Rec: n/a
•Interview: I had an interview with an admissions person who was very nice. I think it went pretty well. It wasn’t extremely amazing, but it wasn’t bad either.

Other
•State (if domestic applicant): Texas
•Country (if international applicant): U.S.A.
•School Type: Public School
•Ethnicity: Asian
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: under $25,000
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 1st generation

Reflection
•Strengths: I showed a lot of interest in Rice. I did an interview, campus tour, overnight stay, information session, etc. and then I used my experiences of Rice in my “Why Rice?” essay. I also told them that Rice was my definite first choice. Questbridge finalist.
•Weaknesses: Chemistry AP score, not high course load freshman, and sophomore year (I was always discouraged from taking advanced classes because I wasn’t put in the “advanced” program in school, but then I found out that my rank was high, and after that I decided not to let others hold me back and began taking the advanced classes that I wanted to take. So life lesson kids. When people don’t believe that you can do something. Prove them wrong…Wait let me add a condition. Prove them wrong as long as it doesn’t endanger your/anyone’s life and as long as it doesn’t cause mass destruction & chaos.)
•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Being a Questbridge finalist definitely helped me stand out. I also showed a lot of interest.
•Where else you are applying or have already applied: I applied to UT, A&M, Baylor, and Tulane. I was going to apply to Emory, Pomona, and Washington University in St. Louis regular decision, but then I got my Rice acceptance.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Believe in yourself. I went through this whole college application thinking that I wouldn’t get into Rice, my dream school, and that put a lot of stress on me. So, I know that even if I tell you not to stress out, you’re probably still going to stress out. I was like that too, but still. Try to enjoy yourself. Believe in yourself. Do whatever you can possibly do to help your application. Do whatever it takes so that you won’t regret not doing it later. Also, show interest in Rice. Maybe talk about unconventional wisdom in an essay or something. That’s like Rice’s motto. In the box picture thing you have to submit please don’t put a picture of rice, the food, put something unique to you, I put a picture of my pet rabbit that I love a lot, it doesn’t have to be something that will impress the admissions office, it just has to be something that is important to you.
Sorry for this super long post, but I know that when I was looking for help through the application process, I was grateful to people who spent time typing out information for other people to see, so this is my attempt to do the same and help ya’ll out.

•Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted into UGA honors, and was going to apply to MIT and University of Richmond

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I would show interest and specialization.
I made a mistake, my SAT 1 should read- 2060, M-730, CR-670, W-660

Choose One:
Decision: Accepted

Objective:
•SAT I (breakdown): 2270 (770 math, 770 writing, 730 critical reading)
•ACT (breakdown): none
•SAT II (place score in parentheses): English (780), Math II (780)

•Job/Work Experience: none
•Volunteer/Community Service: animal shelter (3 hrs/week), playing harp and piano at hospitals and nursing homes through clubs

•Counselor Rec: great! she loves me
•Additional Rec: none
•Interview: none

Other
•State (if domestic applicant): TX
•Country (if international applicant):
•School Type: Big public school, HIGHLY competitive
•Ethnicity: Asian
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: ~200k
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Brother went to rice (2008-2012), not sure if that counts

Reflection
•Strengths: Scores, GPA, essays
•Weaknesses: ECs definitely (no leadership), lack of interest (didn’t visit or interview)
•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: my CA and “why rice” essays were unique and probably appealed to the “quirky intelligence” that Rice likes
•Where else you are applying or have already applied: UT (auto accept), pulling my other apps

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Make sure your essays have a unique perspective, Rice values that. Don’t try to overuse huge vocab words to sound intellectual; instead present insightful thoughts and ideas into accessible every day language. As my brother (Rice alumnus and essay advisor, so he knows how this stuff works) says: be a rustic philosopher, don’t be pretentious.

Wohoo. I’m in! 34 ACT. 3.97 unweighted GPA, 8 AP’s upon graduation. It’s a dream come true.

Congrats to all those that got in.

Choose One:
Decision: Accepted, RICE Engineering

Objective:
•SAT I (breakdown): 2280 (Math 790, Critical Reading 770, Writing 720)
•SAT II (place score in parentheses): 780 Math 1, 710 Math II
•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.91

•AP (place score in parentheses): AP AB Calc (5), AP Chem (3)
•IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
•Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics, AP BC Calc, Robotics, AP E & M, AP Computer Science
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist

Subjective:
•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Set Construction / Design (I designed a set that my school then built), Scenic Charge (Head of Set Painting and Costumes), Won a Design Award, Competed in an international competition for architecture design,
•Job/Work Experience: Lifeguard for 3 years, worked at Baskin Robins
•Volunteer/Community Service: Worked at the no-kill shelter for homeless dogs
•Summer Activities: Did an immersion experience abroad,
•Essays: I had really good creative essays. I took a nerdy approach to a problem, and made it amusing (I wrote about my failure to engineer a successful fish tank)
•Teacher Recommendations: I choose two teachers, one of whom I had for 2 years in Calculus (the same teacher I got a 5 with) and the other I got along with really well (plus he was an English teacher).
•Counselor Rec: Very good. I’ve been working with mine for 4 years so she knows me really well.
•Additional Rec: N/A
•Interview: Very well. On campus.

Other
•State (if domestic applicant): Missouri
•Country (if international applicant): USA
•School Type: Private
•Ethnicity: Caucasian
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: 350k+
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I showed a lot of interest, plus had some very unique extra-curriculars.

Reflection
•Strengths: Scores, Essays, and Extra-curriculars
•Weaknesses: Not a lot of ‘engineering’ related EC’s. But this could also be viewed as a strength at some colleges (like Rice) who may value the unique perspective you could bring to a field like engineering.

Recommendations: Demonstrated Interest is key. The admissions officer came to my school and she emphasized that schools like Washington University, Northwestern, Rice, etc. that are considered “Ivy-esque” but often used as back ups to Ivy’s really look for the likelihood of a student actually coming there. So if Rice comes to your area, go up and shake their hand and make yourself memorable.

Does anyone know when RD are typically released?
