@omarmkahmad they do not tell though last year they did say when they were behind but never gave a date
I find this thread super relaxing. It gets my mind off of the rejection I’m probably going to receive in a few days
so it’s hypothesized it comes out this friday 5pm EST?
I heard that it will come on Thursday because of an email that ppl from qb got. @matt2122
can someone call the admissions office and ask?
Does anyone know anything about the vibes of each of the residential colleges?
can someone call pls
I called and asked if they had a date when the results would come out. I was told that no, they do not yet have a date.
@matt2122 I found this in an old thread from 2004. I copy-and-pasted some of it if you don’t want to read the link: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/16252-residential-colleges.html
Lovett - Kind of the frat house of rice - loud, drunken and throws pretty decent parties. But I live there and don’t drink, so go figure.
Will Rice - A very sober place. Quiet, friendly, and bad food. Rice’s oldest college, but very pretty.
Wiess - They kind of keep to themselves. They have this crazy “TeamWiess” thing going on. They think they are better than everyone, but they are just jealous. They throw NOD, one of the craziest parties of the year.
Baker - Beautiful commons, but it smells funny. A lot of nice traditions like freshman camping and Christmas tree hunt. One of the oldest colleges. Looks a lot like Will Rice.
Brown/Jones - basically the same place. Both have recently been redone so they have very nice commons, and they have good food. North colleges, so they are far from things, and people don’t go to their parties as much.
Martel - not a college. Well, it kind of is, but since it’s so new people have taken to calling it Martel Dormitory. Beautiful rooms, but not a lot of tradition (yet…) North College.
Hanszen - Stayed here for owl weekend. Really friendly people, but somewhat lacking in a personality of their own. They share their food service with Wiess. Nice, 2-level commons. They have this sculpture of a knight outside and they are very protective of it, I don’t know why. They have lame cheers, but I love them anyway.
Sid Richardson - They think they are awesome because they have a very tall building, but actually they are just a colony of Lovett (Lovett used to have the land that sid is built on). They do primal scream every night at midnight during finals. They throw 80s party which is great. It has a live band and you can dance like a total idiot on a table and just tell people that these are your 80s moves.
The dorm rooms themselves vary by college - in general, the newer colleges have nicer rooms. Some colleges (Will Rice, Brown, some of Baker, Hanszen, maybe others) have hallway bathrooms. Others (Lovett, Martel, some of Baker, others) have suite bathrooms - but Martel and some of Baker have common rooms in their suites, Lovett doesn’t.
The furniture in each dorm room is the same. It’s modular, which means that you can arrange it in a whole lot of different ways - you can loft your bed, or leave it down, etc. When you arrive, look around at how other people set up their rooms for ideas.
I guess that ceiling height varies - my bed is lofted and there is more than enough room above it to sit up straight in bed, and when lying down i can just barely touch the ceiling. I guess this would also depend on how tall you were.
One interesting thing is that all of the dorm rooms cost the same for room and board - it doesn’t matter if you have the grossest room on campus or the most gorgeous. In someways this seems unfair, but since you are assigned randomly it would make sense for people to be forced to pay more if they didn’t want to.
Wow, I guess things change a lot in a decade, since the perspectives of residential colleges have changed quite a bit since that post (including a couple of additions to the list). Just a caveat though, the people at the residential colleges are, overall, about the same. Just that the culture might be a bit different because of how buildings are laid out (e.g., floor culture vs. suite culture, etc.) and the campus perspective of the residential colleges are different, but that’s mostly based off a select few events or because that’s how the student body has convinced one another how things are. That is, whatever “campus perspective” happens to be regarding a college, it shouldn’t dictate your own view of the people within that college. So take these with several grains of salt. Please. Also these are not entirely based off my own personal perspectives either.
Baker: Probably the most respected college. The “Gryffindor” of the residential colleges and they’re located basically smack dab in the middle of campus, so that’s convenient.
Will Rice: Probably one of the least respected colleges, mainly because they’re very competitive and some people feel they really flaunt themselves in that regard. You have to give them credit for their success, however.
Hanszen: Kind of mixed I think. They’re kind of in the middle of the pack in everything so I feel like they don’t get a lot of love or hate either way.
Wiess: A bit culty, or you can just say they love to show their Wiess pride.
Jones: Kind of like Will Rice, but somehow much more respected. Maybe they aren’t as haughty about their competitiveness.
Brown: People almost feel bad for them because they’re so far away from everything and because people generally regard their housing as having the worst facilities.
Lovett: Their people are generally regarded fairly well but very few people, including people from Lovett themselves, respect the building they live in.
Sid Rich: Generally regarded as pretty laid back, but seemingly in a mischievous manner rather than in a purely relaxed and innocent manner.
Martel: They get a bunch of grief for not being college, but I feel like deep down, people sort of respect them. Or they feel sorry. They have a nice looking dorm building though.
McMurtry/Duncan: People mix the two up. They were established at about the same year, have the same building layout, and share the same servery.
And people are 100% correct that facilities vary greatly. The older colleges usually have worse facilities than the new colleges. Even buildings within colleges can differ in quality. For example, Baker has three main buildings which people literally refer to as “Old Baker,” “New Baker,” and “New New Baker.” I never figured out which was which. But really, to people that live in each college, they often don’t feel that dorm quality is a deal breaker, partially because most of them are none the wiser about how the housing quality is at a place they don’t live at. Unless you’re at Brown and you have fire alarms that surprise you every other week at some random midnight.
ChiGuy thank you!!! My father went to Rice so my son could select Hanzen…he knows two kids (not well at all) from his high school that were in Will Rice this year…so it is possible he could get put into it…but IF he gets in he isn’t sure if he should just select the Hanzen option…he is a fun kid, enjoys socializing but doesn’t drink, very athletic, and REALLY cares about food :)…he has been a varsity tennis player while at high school and has loved being on a team…so I would imagine he will do okay anywhere
@slhogan would they let us know if they had a date?
I made a college confidential account just for this thread bc im freaking out. gah the anxiety. i just wish results come out soon. And on my tour for Rice, my prospie was a Wiess member, and idk if it’s necessarily cult-like from my experience but the Team Wiess pride definitely reminds me so much of my school and how we all like band together so idk i guess i’m one of the few that wants to be part of that “cult”.
I made an account just for this thread too haha
Hi all I’m from NYC and applied for bioengineering!
@matt2122 – probably not. The admissions person seemed a tired and exasperated when I briefly spoke with her.
so many NY applicants on here!! gl to all.
what are you guys most excited for if u get into rice?
@lexilexi3 excited for peace of mind
@lexilexi3 I’d be so excited for feeling relieved, saving money for RD applications, happily focusing on my schoolwork, getting to meet other Rice students online, and knowing that I will go to my dream school
what are you nervous for?
