Rice Undergrad Wins New York Times Contest

A very good friend (and, in a way, a personal mentor) of mine just won a contest for the New York Times. Basically, she's really awesome and you should check these articles out:

Yes! I just saw that, too. Sooo proud of her. What a boss. :-)

One of my favorite parts:
“Engineers can’t write? It’s a classic stereotype, and one I hope I defy. I contribute articles for two student publications; I blog and tweet rampantly, receiving ironic in-person compliments on my Facebook posts. I love making things – but I love talking about them more, and getting people excited about making progress in global health.”

Wonderful! I love these sorts of stories that show what Owls can do and do so exceptionally well!

And along with kudos to the Owl – a warm hug to another Rice Mom, who must be feeling so very, very proud! I love this part, too!

Quoting:

She was delighted to tell her mother, an editor for Educational Testing Services, that her communication skills got her the Times prize. “She’s very humanities-oriented, a grammar nerd, and she got this engineering/science-oriented daughter,” Schermerhorn said. “She didn’t know what to do with me. But she’s very excited.”

Aw, this truly exemplifies Rice Owls - always overachieving and perfectly adapt at working in all disciplines! All the awards, Schermerhorn!
