Rice University Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

Ok. It seems we need to contact common app to figure out why that question didn’t show up.

Thank you!

Hope it gets resolved soon.

He’s applying RD…hopefully plenty of time.

Thank you!

I believe you have to select your major first or something like that. I don’t know where I read this but another parent on CC had this problem too and after they selected their major it “unlocked” the last question.

Yes. He selected ‘architecture’, but that essay is still not showing up. What major did your child select?

Maybe we should try different majors to check.

oh hmm does architecture have a different essay though. Thought I read that somewhere.

edit: or additional essay or something. let me see if i can find where i read that. my daughter is doing engineering but i think she still had to pick something more specific after first picking engineering

I don’t know how reliable collegevine is but they are saying if you are applying architecture you have 2 additional 250 word essays instead of that 3rd 500 word essay that other majors are required to answer

edit: Rice admissions page mentions the two 250 essays required for architecture but no mention about architecture applicants not having to do that 3rd 500 word prompt. I’m thinking it’s not required for your architecture applicant but maybe contact admissions to be sure…or maybe can look around in older posts on here I think others may have been wondering the same thing

Yes. We have the 2 architecture essays populate. We did contact admissions, and they seemed to imply that the 3rd essay was needed on top of the architecture essays.

We tried engineering and that did populate the 3rd essay. We should probably contact the school of architecture admissions to confirm.

Thank you for your help!

D24 chose Physics as her first choice and Computer Science as her second choice. The third supplemental essay did populate on our common app.

Good luck figuring it out !

Hello, this post is 2 days after the fact, but I hope I could provide some info as a ED applicant myself.
The common app writing supplement for Rice is conditional, meaning that the essay prompts given depend on what academic areas were chosen for the “Questions” portion of the Rice application. I also applied for architecture, and so I also answered the two architecture specific questions. Its important to note that for architecture applicants, there won’t be a prompt for the 500 word essay about the residential college system, but rather two 250 word limit prompts about architecture and why the applicant chose to study architecture and RiceARCH in particular. In addition, after you complete the application on commonapp, architecture applicants will also have to submit a creative portfolio through the Rice application portal (they email the login information within about 1-2 days of the common app submission). I, myself, spent quite a bit of time on the portfolio; I believe that it is perhaps one of the most important parts for architecture applicants. On the RiceARCH website and in other forum posts, people put alot of weight and emphasis on the portfolio.
As far as information goes, I’ve found CollegeVine and CollegeEssayGuy to be extremely helpful in terms of insight and priming myself up for answering the questions.
I’d assume you already have this information and somebody from Rice has answered back, but I just wanted to share the information I’ve gained just for posterity’s sake.

Rice Architecture admissions confirmed that the residential essay is not required for architecture applicants.

Good luck on your ED decision. Can I ask where else you plan to apply?

My son is still working through his EA apps and won’t even start his Rice app until Dec. He’s still finishing up his portfolio. It is so time consuming.

I definitely agree that it is very time consuming, I am quite stressed out from managing ecs, dual credit classes, and high school.

In all honesty, I’ve planned on keeping my career options open by choosing schools by the major they’re best well known for/ particularly good programs. Right now, I’m interested in MechE, AeroE, MSNE, and architecture.

Rice is obviously the first choice (given the preceptorship, being in Houston where I grew up from, and my affinity towards the study), but I’ve mainly applied to other colleges with different majors all around. As an auto-admit, I applied to UT for AeroE, University of Houston for B.ARCH, A&M for MechE, and (a wild card) Colorado School of Mines for MechE.

I’m also looking into Cornell for architecture, but besides that, not too many architecture schools. Considered doing UT architecture, but again, I wanted to keep my career choices open. I find myself equally passionate for all my interests, so it has been an interesting experience with managing a moral dilemma of “settling on a path.”

I’ve got a bunch of other unrelated schools, but I feel like that’s out of the scope of this thread.

Hope you receive some great options for the fall. I applaud you for sumitting different majors for different schools. Can imagine the time commitment for all those essays. Hope you get to enjoy your senior year.

Just popped in here to say good luck to everyone!!! D started her freshmen year at Rice and is loving it. She was an RD applicant though!

Came to know through her that Rice is already working hard to welcome the class of 2024!

My kido is planning to apply RD as ED/REA slot was already used up. Would you please share stats for your kido ?

Some people shared their stats in this thread from last year:

Most the kids accepted at Rice have pretty high stats. I personally think the biggest key to admission is expressing why exactly Rice is a good fit for you personally.

My daughter was accepted in the RD round and just graduated. It was a great experience for her!

To the extent that it’s helpful, my unhooked daughter was accepted RD in 2022 - 103.28 wGPA, class rank 8/568, 35 ACT (33 M/36/36/36), 12 APs (eight 5s, three 4s, one scrapped due to school administrative error). Currently a sophomore and loving Rice.
