***Rice University RD Class of 2019 Discussion***

@DL43516‌ If you go, you wouldn’t want your parents to be with you. Owl Days are a time for you to interact with the people you will be going to school with next year, and that’s hard to do with a parent there (at least for me it would be).

It sounds dumb, but I’m pretty bummed out that I’ll probably end up at Stanford since Stanford gave me more than 60k in aid… I went to Vision and it felt so perfect. I’ve yet to visit Stanford, but I hope it can live up to Rice… I wonder if Rice would match my aid from Stanford??

They are not peer institutions (Rice would most likely match an offer from WUSTL), but you could try appealing your aid offer.

@vozvratsaa‌ You should definitely try writing a letter to Rice for more financial aid. I will most likely be writing letters as well to see what’s the maximum aid each college can offer me. And no, what you said doesn’t sound dumb at all. After all the rejections, wait list, likelies, and acceptances I’ve endured, I finally grew up and realized fit is more important than prestige lol.

Yeah I will most likely be writing to try for more aid as well. How many of yall are going to Owl Days?!

Probably won’t me going to Owl Days since I went Vision and did most of the same things, but I can assure you that you will love it!

Did anyone else not get any form of Financial Aid notice. Nothing appears with S’s decision letter or on Ester. Not even a loan. I would really like to know what’s up.

@MuggleMom nothing on my account either. I’m not expecting any need-based loans but I’m still wondering about merit-based, though I’m not counting on that either. I’ll have to resort to outside scholarships instead.

Merit came with the admission decision.

@mugglemom did you submit IDOC documents by the priority deadline? Also, check to make sure you satisfied all financial aid requirements. I noticed yesterday that I still had to submit a business tax return (would have been great if that was an idoc requirement).

Thanks @‌tola2015
Everything is in. I checked. It was in IDOC by the deadline but not processed until later.
Just no information at all. Its l ike they just missed my kid. LOL.

Is anyone going to Owl days without a parent. I don’t think we can get away and S most likely will go without us.

@1203southview : I really can’t think of anything.
He was was taking 6 AP courses + 1 Honors. He got B in Calculus BC. 2nd B since his freshman year.
The only other thing I can think of, is he just turned 16 and may be that influenced their decision.
SAT 1560/1600 ( I do not remember his Writing section)
SAT II BIOLOGY - 780
US HIST - 790
WORLD H - 790
Anyway— He took it in stride (better than I expected).

@MuggleMom I’m sure plenty will. Parents have jobs and obligations and I’m positive many will just be dropped off and picked up 2 days later, or something similar. I may go alone.

Good luck to all of you heading to Rice in the fall. My Rice grad son just bought his first house, so there is life after college!! Good luck!

@rice2019, that is hard to understand. I’m glad he is taking it in stride and moving on. Luckily, he has at least two great other choices and I’m sure he’ll do great wherever he chooses to go.

I don’t understand where to see my cost of attendance? I just have this message: “No award information is available for you at this time, please contact the Office of Financial Aid if you have questions. Below is a summary of important key factors that can affect awards:” from ESTHER -> Office of Financial Aid -> Award Status -> Award Year 2015-2016

@1203southview , unless Harvard comes through, Vanderbilt it is!!!

@Lagunatic, S was WL at Rice and accepted at USC here… so odd how this all works. 3.88UW and 35 ACT. No offer of travel though. Trying now to decide between U of Michigan and Emory.

@Picarat that’s exactly what I got too. I was going to give it a day or two then call FinAide

It all seems so random. My son was wait-listed at Rice, but has received great offers elsewhere. We won’t be waiting around for Rice though, he’s definitely going to accept one of the other offers in the next couple of weeks. Good luck to those who are still hopeful!

I am an international student and have been accepted. However, there is no aid info showing up on my Esther account. I am really really worried right now: without a huge amount of aid I will never be able to afford Rice. It is stated on the website that Rice meets 100% demonstrated need of all admitted students … I was trying to not panic but I am still very scared: is there a chance that Rice doesn’t give me any money??? I mean they will give money to ALL admitted students, right? Is that what it means? I really reallyyyy like Rice so I am in a panic right now :frowning:
