***Rice University RD Class of 2019 Discussion***

@501501501‌ You might want to wait and contact finaid by phone on Monday.

Just wondering, does Rice mail the accepted students a package with a physical letter and financial aid offer?

@501501501‌ I think Rice is only “need aware” for international applicants… But even so, if you get in I think you’re guaranteed aid. Is none showing up?

@501501501 Rice’s FinAid website says “Rice University provides need-based financial aid on a limited basis to International undergraduates.” They may give you aid, but it might not be 100% of your need because you’re international. I would definitely call the FinAid office to see what they are planning to do on Monday. Fingers crossed for you, and I hope you get the money you need to attend Rice!

@OrangeLand‌ Hey I remember you! Yeah I was on the Stanford thread  Congrats on Rice

I’m not going to Owl Days because as @z0e101‌ said, Vision is close to the same thing. But you all will love it, promise

Does anyone know how my son can take himself off the waitlist? He is going to accept another offer very soon and being on a waitlist anywhere feels like it complicates things unnecessarily. Rice is the only school he’s been waitlisted at. The others he received acceptances or rejections, and I think that makes things easier, really.

@chris17mom If your son was offered a place on the waitlist, all he has to do is accept or decline the spot. They won’t keep you on it if you decline. There should be a waitlist reply form of some sort on his portal. I declined my waitlist spot at another school because I agree, it complicates things unnecessarily, especially if you are trying to accept other offers.

@z0e101 Thanks! Yes, he has three other good schools that have given him affordable offers, so he will be choosing from those.

@BSMDorbust: We went to Owl Days last year with our son. We went to everything and didn’t see him until the final joint session and then he was 30 rows ahead of us and didn’t see us. Owl Days was excellent and I highly recommend it - especially if you aren’t already sure about Rice.

@DL43516‌ There is a separate schedule for parents and for students. Even as a parent, I thought that was a great thing. It will give you a great opportunity to see what life will be like at Rice - and life at Rice will be without parents! There were some joint sessions for parents and students, but we didn’t run into our son at any until the last session. Owl Days was an awesome experience.

@parenting3‌ Why was that directed at me?

The education at Rice is not worth the cost

Talked to FinAid today. If your Ester account doesn’t have any info and all your paperwork is received, sit tight. They mailed all the financial aid paperwork this weekend and should get to you in a few days. No idea why Ester is not reflecting anything. They couldn’t help me with that.

@emenya Thanks! You too! :smiley:

I have a few questions I’ve been wondering about for a while. I have a friend who told me that we can accept admission from multiple colleges, as long as we decide on one and reject the others by the May 1st deadline? Is this true, and if so, what’s the point?

@OrangeLand To “accept admissions” at a college requires putting down a nonrefundable deposit of at least a few hundred dollars.

I see no point in doing that and then reversing course on all but one by May 1st.

Colleges typically do not require a response by May 1st anyway.

It’s a different issues if you want to remain on the wait list of one or more colleges beyond May 1st while accepting the admissions offer from one college (including a deposit). That’s what many do if the wait list school is the one they really want. If you get off the wait list of the school you really want, you rescind the acceptance at the school you accepted and lose your deposit.

Read what you signed when you used the common app and other apps and that will tell give you your answer.

I know UT Austin’s enrollment deposit is refundable, which is generous. @MyOdyssey and @cptofthehouse thanks!

I thought this was extremly interesting:
Only 20 international students will receive the need based aid scholarship

@MuggleMom‌ If my ESTHER isn’t showing anything, does that mean I didn’t receive any merit scholarships?
