Rice University Regular Decision Class of 2025

I got my portal this morning

Does the portal reflect everything you have submitted, including scores? I know there was an issue with that earlier. Have you been able to have an interview or are you waiting to hear in that?

I think it shows everything you submitted (tests, transcript, etc.)

You can request an interview, but I think the deadline has passed for that.

Questions about letters of recommendation—
It looks like via the common app one can add one optional, but on Rice’s website it sounds as if you could potentially send in another via email. My child has a mentor who knows them very well and wants to provide a letter, but they used the optional slot on the common app already. Do you see any reason to not email and additional letter?
Just found out they will not be able to have an interview, so even through it would be past the Jan 1 deadline, it would provide more info on the applicant. Any downsides to sending it in?

It is understood by every college that solid applicants will have more would-be letter-writers than the available slots allow. The purpose of limiting those letters is to a) have the applicant choose which perspectives they most want to highlight while b) conserving admissions officer time so everyone else who applies can be given a fair shake. Choosing to send additional letters can be either good or bad for the applicant depending on whether the new information in that letter outweighs the risk of ticking off the admissions officer.

Any predictions if Rice will push back the notification date and follow suit of some other schools. Curious how much of an increase they have seen in RD apps.

Does anybody know when Rice send out invitations to the Rice/Baylor med program?

You can’t push back RD. I mean, April 1 is already late. I’m hopeful they beat it.

Ivy League pushed their decision dates back to April 6. Princeton is RD only this year and you have 27 days (May 3) to accept if you are admitted.

These numbers were published recently in the school newspaper.

Test score optional has all these kids mass applying to reach schools. And why not, if you can slide in under the radar, go for it I guess. This is also part of the delay in admissions at many schools.

I believe Rice will bring in extra personnel if necessary to get through the increase in applications on time. In the past Rice has sent out decisions shortly before Ivy Day.

Did anyone else’s parents just start to get a bunch of emails from Rice? I applied a while ago but they’ve sent me and my parents like 10 emails in the past few days.

Yes. That’s the so-called “bait to make you wait” or the “mass app arms race”.

Some schools send emails because they don’t want you to forget them or accept an offer from another school because you are tired of waiting. I consider this as mostly positive because the intentions are basically good.

Other schools are aggressive recruiters and are trying to build up their applications for marketing reasons. “Oh, look at us, we had 40,000 applicants and our rival only had 30,000.” Then they reject the majority of the kids. Also, some schools can then say, “look at how many underprivileged students we are recruiting.” You get the idea.

These schools are well known for mass mailing to increase their applications: UChicago, Berklee, Illinois, Indiana, Tulane, Baylor, Ole Miss, all Ivy schools, UCLA, and Stanford.

In the end, the only thing that matters is if you like the school and the school likes you. How they reach you might be up for debate, but your decision should never be questioned by anyone. Good luck!

Thanks! That’s very helpful!

I was wondering about this too whether this is a good sign or, nothing at all.

It is a sign that Rice has been inundated by applications and wants the 29K people who applied to feel wanted and valued while they wait. It has absolutely nothing to do with any individual applicant.

So what does it mean for applicants who have not received many email from them? Does it mean most likely rejected?

It just means some people are on more mailing lists than others, there is no deeper meaning than that.
