Rice University Regular Decision Class of 2025

How are Rice students similar to SWAT students?

Intelligent, Inquisitive, Unique, Collaborative, super engaged, ridiculously friendly
While visiting campus a few years ago an Owl described Owls as “quirky and unique, taking pride in their own quirkiness and uniqueness while being incredibly accepting of others for theirs.” That could describe Swatties as well.
Incredibly strong community feel on both campuses. Owls from what I have seen on campus and read about know how to balance work hard/ play hard and enjoy more light hearted fun. Some Swatties know how to relax/ Some - like my daughter have taken a few years to figure that out how to relax.

I can

Houston is a blue area of TX. Chip Roy is just one of many ridiculous figures representing TX but isn’t near Houston. It would bother me a little to send my kid to a state that lets people walk around carrying giant guns. But I’m sure Rice is fine.

Can anyone see their fin aid package on their portal?

Yeah, I can see it.

where? because I cannot

If I were you, I’d feel pretty good right now

its in the financial aid section for people who have it. i didnt apply for aid so i guess i have to wait more lol

We did apply and I see the same checklist I did yesterday, so

this is someone else’s screenshot Imgur: The magic of the Internet

No, for me right under the checklist is “Frequenty Asked Questions” Again, I would feel better if I had that.

can everyone withdraw?

I can

I assume you meant is it still possible and that wasn’t a request.

hahaha yeah thats what I meant

Speaking as a Texan with a child going to school in Boston, a former resident of Houston and one with multiple family members and friends in Houston, Houston is a very conservative city compared to the Northeast and West Coast. Although they may be “blue”, they are by no means liberal.

So, if you have concerns about your child being in a community that has conservative views, Houston is definitely such a community. That being said, conservatives are also very welcoming of alternate viewpoints on gun ownership, etc as long as they are presented with respect and tact.

I felt safer when I lived in San Antonio, Texas
everyone assumes everyone else has a gun, so everyone behaves!!!

Texas is a big diverse state. The area of Houston near Rice (Inside Loop 610), the Montrose/Museum District, is very liberal. The City of Houston itself votes Democratic and Houston has a Democratic Mayor and majority Democratic City Council. The majority of the Harris County (county that Houston is in) government (County Judge and County Commissioners) are Democrats. The U.S. Representatives with districts inside the loop are Democrats. Loop 610 is a freeway that circles Houston about 5 miles out from downtown. Most of the trendy urban areas inside the loop where Rice students go to shop, eat, etc. (Montrose, Heights, Midtown) are liberal. The further out you go into the Houston suburbs, the more conservative the people get. Texas state government is controlled by conservative republicans such as Governor Greg Abbott. Both the State House and Senate are majority Republican, but the representatives and senators that represent close in Houston are Democrats. You see the same pattern in Austin, Dallas and other big Texas cities. Both Texas Senators are Republicans. I have lived in inner loop Houston 35 years and I have never seen anyone openly carrying a gun. See the Rice policy re: guns Campus Carry Policy | Rice University

All this gun talk will make my daughter’s likely rejection from Rice easier to take.

We used to think Houston was liberal (it is compared to other parts of the state) but since my son has been recently living up in New England, I can tell you the majority of people who vote blue and call themselves liberal in Houston are more conservative than those who vote Red in New England. And this includes the Rice/West U area.

I am not saying this to start an argument. I’m trying to provide info for those who are concerned. My son is specifically trying to get back to a more conservative area and Houston is definitely considered more conservative than Boston.
