Richmond EA Class of 2023

called today and was told that if did not have merit listed in letter then not getting merit.

Is that true for Richmond Scholars nominations as well? I didnā€™t think those notifications had gone out yet.

Scholar notifications are not out yet. Before 2/1.

I know they claim to be need blind with merit but the stats Iā€™ve seen lead me to believe itā€™s based on more than just academics. Just curious if thatā€™s the caseā€¦

@Cavitee It seems to be based on more than just academics/stats. I believe they review holistically for merit as well as for admissions.

Hmā€¦ i never submitted my first quarter grades, and they never reminded me to. could that be a reason why i was deferred?

Iā€™m shocked my daughter didnā€™t get any merit aid. Her stats are much higher than most of the people that have posted they got something. She has long established EC, she is published , amazing writer , with great Recs. Very curious how they came up with their merit distribution

@hopefully32 Itā€™s possible. Have you seen this admissions blog post from last year? https://admissionblog.richmond.edu/?start=12

@hopefully32 probably. I was deferred as well and I believe its bc my grades were late. i submitted them two weeks ago bc my counselor never put them in. I called them after submitting and asked if it would affect my status and all they said was thanks for submitting your grades. needless to say, they are not good communicators

@nassau1997 their website from last year says you can either be rejected, deferred, or accepted in EA. donā€™t know if that still applies

decision: deferred
act: 31
very involved with art and submitted two different art supplements for Richmond scholars
I had four alumni recommendations as well
8 AP classes, two varsity sports, and 6 clubs
visited this summer and remained in contact with my admissions counselor
cousin graduated there with a double major in biology in chemistry
aunt worked there in the 90ā€™s fundraising for the school for 10 years
My grades werenā€™t submitted on time so that may be the reason why

Happy for all who received merit money. Iā€™m too surprised my D did not receive any - straight A student, almost all courses AP or Honors, 36 ACT, lots of EC w leadership roles, Girl Scout gold award, recognized for depth of community service, published writing. First college not to offer her merit - without it, cost is too high compared to other options.

A holistic approach means top grades and scores donā€™t necessarily mean merit. They want a diverse class and the truth is we donā€™t know what is in someone elseā€™s application that makes them a great fit for this school.
Also, not sure if this applies to Richmond, but other colleges know a lot of high stat EA applicants are applying to many colleges and doubt they are the top choice. I know this is a big topic on the Northeastern thread.

Iā€™m not saying there arenā€™t other variables (EC) but what Iā€™m alluding to are the studentā€™s HS track record of attendance as well as ā€œneedā€ playing a role.
For example - over the last 3 years 7/15 applicants from my daughterā€™s school have been accepted and not one has gone on to attend UR. So when looking at the applications are they disregarding that element or are they thinking ā€œwhy allocate merit to this student when odds are not good theyā€™ll attend anyway.ā€
Regional AOs know there schools well so I canā€™t imagine itā€™s just academics, scores and ECā€¦

@Cavitee - Thatā€™s where demonstrated interest plays its role.

Both son and daughter admitted. No merit for either. Still in consideration though because they both loved the school. Would be nice to have them at the same school and this is only one of a few that they both liked. Congrats to those that got in and also received merit. We are OOS (west coast).

Canā€™t speak for the other applicants but we attended and touredā€¦

Donā€™t lose hope yet. From the admissions blog: ā€œThe Presidential Scholarship and Richmond Scholars Program are separate programs with separate selection processes. Receiving one (or not) doesnā€™t necessarily have any bearing on whether youā€™re considered for the other.ā€

Iā€™m also very surprised about not getting any scholarships. I have a 4.0 unweighted (98% average unweighted), a 34 ACT, and a very well-rounded, cohesive application. This is very disappointing.

Scholars notifications are out now - I just received it on my email today. Though there is nothing on my portal yet because I didnā€™t apply early.
