My D just got off the waitlist at richmond. What are the differences in terms of students, academics? Study abroad posibilities?
She wants to major in environmental science, languages (italian, russian maybe, already speaks french and spanish). Of course she already put the deposit at Dickinson and we are so far very happy and she likes it, so its not as if she was settling or anything.

bumping this because we really need help…will there be any students next week since classes are out? How will she be able to evaluate if she likes the atmosphere if there are few if any students on campus?

I don’t know how many can CC can provide a good comparison of these two schools. Classes are out and exams are over. I helped my S move out last weekend and campus was getting pretty empty then.

S was offered admission from the waitlisted at UR and decided to go. He found his niche about a month into his freshman year and can’t imagine being anywhere else. The are a number of threads that can provide about as much information as you can get on UR short of being on campus.

Thanks standrews. Had your son visited and sat in class before he was taken off the waitlist? Richmond was a last minute addition to D’s list and was too late to visit before applying, but liked it enough to apply. Then she was waitlisted and we didn’t think she had a chance, so again didn’t visit in april. Now here we are trying to decide and the complication we have is that she was just told she can’t do an overnight stay or sit in class because semester is pretty much over. How can she evaluate the school enough to make a decision?

Our daughter is a freshman there and loves it. She is going to do a double major in Political Science and Environmental Studies. So far she loves the classes she has taken (only a few) within the two majors. The campus is beautiful and the best part, in our opinion, is the class size and professor relationships…SMALL, good interaction, accessible, all very seasoned. We’ve been impressed thus far. For what it is worth, we visited both Dickinson and UR as they were high on her list. There was no comparison overall in her mind (nor ours). Richmond won hands down! Have you been to campus? It is beautiful. She attended classes at both and thought both were great, but for a dozen reasons, Richmond came out on top in her mind and ours. I hope this helps!

My son had visited Richmond a couple of times. We live fairly close to UR and he used UR as a “practice” college visit. He liked it enough to apply.

UR is set apart from it’s surrounding by geographic barriers. It sits between the James River and a hill. There are no 4 lane road that go through or next to the campus. Yet in a couple of minutes you can be in a suburban setting and in 10 minutes an urban setting. I think the campus is beautiful and the many photos I’ve seen do not overstate how nice it is. There is a lot of construction finishing up this summer, and most of it should be cleared out by the start of the fall semester.

UR has a rather generous policy with respect to AP credits. They will allow up to 7 units of credit. Considering that only 35 units are needed for graduation, even 3 AP credits enable 8 semesters of 4 classes. Here’s a link:

The past 2 years UR has offered a sort of extended orientation program called Roadmap to success. It starts a few days before freshman orientation. I don’t know if they will be offering it again this summer. Here’s a link:

Classes are indeed over for the semester–have been for two weeks. I don’t know when you need to make up your mind on Richmond, but you might call admissions and see if you can sit in on a summer school class.

In terms of campus atmosphere, it won’t be the same. Fewer students, fewer things open, less activity, etc.

Update: daughter decided to go to Richmond.
Thanks everyone for your input.
