Ridgecrest South, East, or Lakeside East

All are non-honors of course. Which would you choose and why? I can’t really tell any difference between the three other than the floorplan of South versus the other two.

Ridgecrest East & Lakeside East both seem to have a bit bigger living room area and they have coffee tables whereas South doesn’t.

From those that know. Do the kids usually hang out in the living room or do they mostly stay in their own bedrooms?

All would be good choices. I’m in Ridgecrest West, and East is basically a carbon copy of it right next door. Having a big living room is a good thing if you actually use the living room. For the first semester, my roommates and I hardly used the living room. Now, we do use it a little bit, but still not as much as other people use theirs. We’re also the type of people who don’t do much dorm decorating either. The larger living room is good when you have guests over as it is basically a separate room unlike the setup in Ridgecrest South. It really depends on your D and her future roommates on how the living room will be used and what residence hall would be best.

Isn’t Ridgecrest South already full? Or is just the honors tower full?

As for hanging out in living rooms vs bedrooms…

It depends on the student…some students are the more social types and will hang out in the living room… watching TV or whatever…

Some students are the more shy/quiet types that like to spend time alone in their bedrooms.

In my younger son’s suite, they have pushed aside the living room furniture and have put in a conference table to make it into a “library/study” room. They do have a TV in there for times when no one is studying there.

In my older son’s suite, the living room is Guitar Hero Central.

You can’t use the online floorplans to judge how big various rooms are. Those floorplans are distorted and not to scale.

Ridgecrest south is already full? I heard that they arent going to open those dorms for selection until 4/20

I could be wrong…maybe only honors side is full.

But…why would Ridgecrest South non-honors be closed for selection until 4/20? What about the kids with earlier dates?

From what I’ve heard/read, there are still rooms available in the non honors side of Ridgecrest South. And since 1st room selection for non honors isn’t until the 20th I tend to believe it.

I’m not necessarily going by floorplans as to the size of the rooms. It just looks like from all the pics I’ve seen that the South living rooms are smaller than the others. However the South kitchens look to be bigger and more open.

I think we’ll try and get into South and then fallback to Ridgecrest East if need be. Son has the 1st selection time though so hopefully he’ll get what he wants.

IIRC, housing selection for people eligible for living learning communities like honors housing is during the earlier March dates, but only the living learning communities that one is eligible for will show up for selection. The student can login again when non-living learning community room selection starts and choose a non-honors dorm then. This is how it worked for me. For example, I’m in honors and CBA, so during my selection window for living learning communities in March, I could choose an available space in any of the honors dorms or in Friedman (the CBA dorm). When regular selection rolled around, I could have selected Paty, Burke, or any of the other non-living learning community spaces in addition to the living learning community spaces I was eligible for.

As for Ridgecrest South being full, I do not know if this is true or if housing is blocking some available spaces as they reserve the right to do. Note that people will change dorms as the time goes on and spaces might become available. There probably won’t be entire rooms open, but there should be some single and maybe two spaces that open up in certain rooms. You just have to check back and switch if something opens up.

The part of Ridgecrest available for Honors is definitely full. There maybe rooms in the non honors area. I missed my time I was on an airplane so I contacted Housing and they told me that Ridgecrest was full and that I would select on April 20 at 6:00 since I missed my date. I am a eng./science major any thoughts on Riverside or lakeside as far as access etc? I will search to see if any Ridgecrest Honors move to Tut which the woman in housing says happens.

I think that for science/engineering majors, Riverside is closer. Riverside East is the closest to the science/engineering buildings, while Riverside West is closer to Lakeside Dining.

However, none are badly located. Riverside North might be considered to be the farthest? maybe???

My son can’t choose until the 20th, either. I’m curious as to why folks are not looking at Riverside compared to Ridgecrest? J. Gates thought Riverside would be a good choice. Is it the longer walk?

:)

I like Riverside. My older son was there his first year, and it was great.

I think some gravitate to Ridgecrest because it’s newer…so some think…newer = better. But, they’re all great.

And, it looks like Riverside got some new couches.

Riverside is farther from the Quad, so if new freshmen will be taking a lot of classes in that area, they may want to stay in Riverside West because that is closer to the tram stop (altho many just walk). The tram stop is by Lakeside Dining.
