I have a question about riding the UT buses... :S

Is it going to be mad crowded in the fall??? I use the bus system to get from class to the another and sometimes it gets full or people have to ride standing...? Anybody know what happens? Do they run more buses on the routes or what?

The two buses that you’ll most likely be utilizing once you get to campus are the Forty Acres and the West Campus buses. The Forty Acres takes you all around the campus and runs more frequently in between the times of 12-2 PM since that’s when student traffic is the heaviest. The buses will run about every 5 minutes around then. Otherwise, that bus, during mornings and afternoons, runs about every 10ish minutes. Once the evening comes around, it’ll run every 20 or so. The West Campus bus will take you through campus as well as West Campus, which is where a lot of students live in apartments.

Both of these buses can get crowded and are the most crowded in between passing periods and ESPECIALLY when it’s raining/cold outside. It’s not so bad and you get used to riding them after a while, as well as the traffic that may come with them.

It also depends on what stops you get on/off at.
For WC route, if you’re getting on early in the route (before 25th st) you have a better chance of catching that bus 15 min before class starts, but I can’t tell you how many times that I watch said bus pass the stops on 22nd so plan accordingly.

Is it really worth it to ride the buses to get from class to class? I almost put myself in two back-to-back classes that were literally on complete opposite sides of campus (SZB and NOA) but I figured that a bus wouldn’t be reliable enough to get me there on time consistently. I’m guessing most of the people that ride them are people going to and from West Campus?

@Buriedalie: Not gonna lie, that’s a pretty intense walk even for us experienced folk to get there in under 10 min. You may want to try the WC to see if you can get there in time the first week while profs are pretty forgiving about being on time otherwise, you’ll just have to tell your prof that you’re going to be late because you have to trek across the entire f-ing campus.

Well, I actually ended up putting myself in a different section of one of the back-to-back classes… it wasn’t at a time I wanted (8:00 AM :(), but I knew that there was no way I could get from SZB to NOA in under 10 minutes and without getting lost (you’re talking to the person who was trying to find the PCL at orientation and ended up over by Duren).

You really won’t be able to effectively use the buses to cross campus between classes. SZB to NOA is a horrible idea actually, and basically impossible to even bike between in under 10 minutes during a crowded class-change period. Only put classes back to back if they are reasonably close together. If you can walk it in less than 5, basically adjacent buildings, it’s okay.

The only times I’ve had adjacent classes before were when they were in the same building. It worked out well.

Starting in the summer is awesome. I’m so glad that i did it too. You’ll have a distinct advantage when all the other freshmen start pouring in, being lost, and walking slowly. Just plow them down! …or you know you could ask them if they need help

hahaha! exactly my thoughts! that’s the whole point of why i came here early. now ive learned the ropes about getting around and i wont feel sol in august.

^ All immediately next door to each other. 60 second walk at most. GSB and CBA are the same building, just different sections, it’s all connected indoors and you can’t tell it’s not just one building. UTC is across 21st street from them, and there is a sky-bridge/walkway type thing that goes over the street that you can use.

You can make JGB to BUR in 10 min if you walk fast and know where you’re going. SZB to JGB is just too far for being on MLK.

Here are your majors streets to know running North to South: 21st, 24th, deen keeton.
East to West: Guadalupe (drag), Speedway, San Jacinto.
It’s about a 5 - 10 minute walk from any of these points to the next going in the same direction (i.e. 21st –> 24th = 10 min, Speedway –> San Jacinto = 10 min)
