Hi, I'm scheduling my courses for my 12th grade year right now.
I'm planning on applying to PSU and Schreyer's Honors College and I was wondering does this look well prepared and intense? I'm really worried I'm going to make a mistake or something.

I'm taking...

AP Psych (1 semester course)
Sociology (1 semester coruse)
College Prep English 12 (year long course)
Health Systems and Professions (year long course)
Advanced Web Development (year long course)
Anatomy and Physiology (year long course)
Phys Ed 12 (1 semester course)
Visual Basic Programming (1 semester course)
Study Hall Lunch (year round)
CP Math 3*

*For math do you think I should continue with College Prep Math, or bump up to Functions and Trig? Do you think College Prep math has the necessary level of rigor for entry to PSU or Schreyer's?

Drop PE. Take AP calc BC.
Drop Visual basic. Take AP Compsci.
Drop Advanced web development. Take a more serious class.
Drop Study hall. Useless.
Drop health systems.

LOL Rocketswinall you’ve got to be joking! We have to take gym every year, also it’s a study hall lunch, I get a chance to work and study while I eat. It comes in handy because 1. Eating in the cafeteria is a waste of time, and 2. I am in a lot of EC so I have meetings after school.

Romanigypsyeyes- Gym, Math, English, Sodcial Studies, are. I am choosing to take another year of Science, and the rest are electives.
We may not have an Adv. Web Deisgn class if we don’t get enough people, if that happens I may take Spanish 3, I have all my required years but I have this feeling a 3rd year might be a good idea.

Are you going to challenge yourself with these classes? If so, just take them and do your best rather than worry if you should have done something else.

Spanishpotatoes- Thanks, I’m worried though I’m not going to get accepted or something because i didn’t take the right courses even though I am meeting the requirements and even going beyound, I’m just worried it still isn’t good enough. It’s okay if I don’t get into Schreyer’s, while I really like the program it is my reach college and I can try for a Gateway admission.
What abotu PSU though?
Do any of you go there?

I don’t go to PSU, but…
What classes you are going to take definitely depends on where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Also, it’s important that you feel comfortable in the classes you’re taking.
There’s no point in pushing yourself so far that later you regret what you did, right?

So if you feel that your schedule will achieve your goals, then go for it!
If you want to challenge yourself a little more, you can try AP Compsci.

But don’t stress out about it. Just do well in the classes you choose to take.

College Prep Math 3 (all year)
College Prep English 12th Grade (all year)
Anatomy and Physiology (all year)
Advanced Web Development (all year)
AP Psych (second semester)
Sociology (first semester)
Gym 12 (second semester)
Information Technology (first semester){it’s a college course so I get college credit for it}
Health Professions and Systems (all year)

That’s NOT TRUE!
You have to do well and get a good GPA and SAT scores, you can’t just get in without trying. The same with any school or job, you can’t get anywhere by not doing anything.

Okay so this was my schedule for next year,

College Prep Math 3 (all year)
College Prep English 12th Grade (all year)
Anatomy and Physiology (all year)
Advanced Web Development (all year)
AP Psych (second semester)
Sociology (first semester)
Gym 12 (second semester)
Information Technology (first semester){it’s a college course so I get college credit for it}
Health Professions and Systems (all year)

However they had to cancel Advanced Web Design and Information technology, again, due to the lack of students interested (only 2 people signed up for each class including myself!)
So I need to decide what to put in it’s place, I need to decide on either 3 semester classes, or 1 full year class and 1 semester class.
I can’t decide what would be the best option and look the best on my transcript.

Should I take a full year of chem and a semester course of graphic design or something (1 full year and 1 semester course, or Graphic Design 1 and 2, and Video media technology (3 semester coruses.) Another idea I had was Dual College Enrollment.
I really wanted to take the classes that were cancled and I don’t want to just take any random class to replace them, should I take a basic college course or another science or math course at my high school and electives?

It is fairly true…don’t kid yourself. It’s Penn State - its reputation isn’t in it’s challenging academics, it’s in “accept most athletic kids that pull in B’s and C’s at public Pennsylvania high schools and watch them party 7 days a week and still pull in B’s and C’s in their Communications classes.”

^You haven’t taken Chem yet? You won’t get into college w/o a Chem course, so yes, take Chem. You are lucky that your school canceled those other 2 classes.

Are you in state or out of state? If you are out of state and want to go to the main campus it is a bit tougher.

I think a good deal depends on your gpa and sat scores. We have a very large high school (500 kids a class, not in PA) and the average SAT of students accepted to the main campus (University Park) is 1850.

Very few with SATs lower than 1750 were rejected and these all had weighted gpas lower than 3.5. The scattergram does not show unweighted gpa.

This is all for PSU and not the honors college. We had only one applicant for the honors college and the scores are not shown.

I’m in State, I’m currently in 11th grade and I’m thinking about dual enrollment where I would take a class or two there over the summer, and then another next year after I’m done with my high school classes for the day.

If I take college courses and do well wouldn’t that help too? I’m really interested in some courses we don’t offer at our high school but through out gifted program we can go to the university and take them (I’ve met several kids that are dual enrolled).

Honors is my reach school, if I make it I’ll be really, really happy but if not that’s fine. I mean only 4% make it, it’s worth a try but if I don’t make it oh well I’ll know I tried and Penn State in general is a great school, they have so many great programs I’m interested in and are a great fit for me.

What score do you think I would need with a 3.4-3.5 unweighted GPA?
